CLARENCE E. BENSON, OE HARRIS, IOWA.
ANCHORING DEVICE.
Application filed August 22, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harris, in the county of Osceola, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anchoring Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is directed to improvements in anchoring devices particularly adapted for use in connection with silos.
The invention has for its object to provide an anchoring device which may be conveniently attached to any well known make of silo, and will effectually hold the same upon its foundation.
lVith these and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of asilo showing the same equipped with the anchoring devices. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the silo showing a slightly modified form of the invention. Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view of one of the rods used in the modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawing the numeral '1 designates a base upon which the silo 2 is supported, said silo being of that form which is constructed from stave, the same being held together by metallic hoops 8.
The anchoring device consists of a pair of rods 3 and 4c, and opposing ends of which are threaded and are engaged by a turn buckle 5, which may be adiusted to regulate the tension of the rods. The upper end of the rod 8 is provided with an eye 6 and through which is passed a screw which firmly secures the upper end of said rod to the side of the silo.
The lower end of the rod 4 is provided with an eye 7 and in which is interlocked the eye 8 formed upon the upper end of the brace rod 9 which lies adjacent the outer edge of the foundation land has secured to its lower end an anchor 10, which is embed- Specification of Letters Patent.

ded in the ground thus firmly holding the silo against swaying movement, which is oft times caused by heavy wind.
The anchoring device further consists of a pair of horizontally disposed rods 11 and 12 the opposing ends of which are threaded and are engaged by a turn buckle 13.
The other end of the rod 12 is provided with an eye and through which is passed the rod 4, and formed upon the inner end of the rod 11 and engages the lowermost hoop 3, whereby an additional anchoring device is provided which will prevent any sliding or lateral movement of the silo due to any cause whatsoever.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing, it will be noted that a rod 11 is flattened at its inner end. as at 16 so that the same may pass between the staves forming the silo, and is provided with an eye 17 which is adapted to engage one of the interior hoops 18 which are frequently employed in this art. The rod 12 is connected in a manner the same as that of the other form of the invention.
From this construction it will be seen that I have produced an anchoring device for silos which may be easily attached thereto without in any way changing the construction of the silo, and it will be further noted that the number of anchors may be varied according to the size of the silo.
I claim:
The combination with a silo having spaced hoops encircling the same, a rod formed of two sections adj ustably secured together and pivotally secured to one of said hoops, and extending downwardly and outwardly from the said hoops, a rod pivotally secured to the lower end of the lowermost of said sec tions, a spherical anchor pivotally mounted on the end of the last mentioned rod to maintain the same in the ground, and a hook member slidably mounted on the lower section of the first mentioned rod, a second hook secured to the lowermost of said hoops, and a turn buckle adjustably securing the ends of the said hooks together.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE E. BENSON.
