LAN D-ANCHOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,811, dated July 18, 1893. Application filed December 22, 1892. Serial No. 456,072. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN STOMBAUGH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Briceton, in the county of Paulding and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Land-Anchors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in land anchors; the object of the same being to provide a land anchor which can be readily driven into the ground to attach objects thereto and hold them securely in position; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification: Figure l is a side elevation, partlyin section, showing the means employed for driving the anchor. Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevations. Fig. 4. is a view showing the application of my invention to a fence. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the manner of securing the Wire to the sill piece.
A'designates the screw portion of the land anchor, which is provided with a spiral flange and centering point. Above the screw portion is a stem A having notches or recesses a above which extends a shank b, the upper end of this shank having an eye, 0, to provide for the attachment of a wire, as c, which is secured to the object it is desired to anchor in place.
B designates a tube or cylinder, which is provided with depending portions d adapted to engage with the notches or recesses a in the anchor, so that by turning said tube, either with the crank-handle shown in Fig. 1 or the lever-shown in Fig. 3, the anchor can be driven or screwed into the ground to the desired depth. Before driving the anchor a wire, cable, or other flexible connection, is made fast to the eye 0 and passed through the tube, and when the anchor is driven the tube B is withdrawn and earth packed around the wire, which can then be made fast to the object it is desired to retain in place.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown the application of my invention to a fence, and in this instance one end of the flexible connection is passed through an opening in the sill piece to the top of the fence, while the other end extends around the sill piece and is twisted as shown.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modification of my invention, and in this case the shank of the anchor is round and snugly fits in the tube, to which it is keyed, and the tube is turned by a lever which is adj ustably attached to the same. This form of my invention may be used either as a fence post orland anchor.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide the bases of fence posts with threaded portions which are caused to enter the ground by turning said base, and I do not claim such construction as my invention; but
