Be it known that I, JAMES W. HANGER, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of Macy, in the county of Miami. and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful .Improvement in Corner and End Posts, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in cornor and end posts with wire tighteners attached, and the invention has for its object to provide anew and improved construction of corner and end posts, having wire tighteners attached and designed for per-' -mitting the ends of wire fencing to be connected to the posts in such manner thatthe fence will be held taut and upright, and
may be retightened to compensate forany stretching that may take place.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of one of the posts of a tightener attached, Fig. 2 is a top plan View of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a partial perspective View of the post and tightener attached.
In the present embodiment of the inven tion, the fence" is composed of horizontal wires 1, and vertical wires 2, the horizontal and vertical wires being interwoven or secured together in any suitable or desired manner at their intersection. The ends of the horizontal wires of the line of fence are connected to a panel or plate 3 of suitable material, as for instance, metal or wood of suflicient strength, and each of the said plates or panels 3 hasnear one edge a series of spaced openings 4 for engagement by the ends of the horizontal wires 1. The ends of these wires are passed through the openings 4:, and are twisted around the body of the wire as indicated at 5, to prevent disengagement of the said ends.
Each of the posts is of angle material as shown, consisting of integral portions 6 and 6", arranged at approximately a right angle with respect to each other and each having at one end an integral web 7. The post is seated in the ground a sufficient depth, the end having the webs 7 being inserted in the ground, and the post is arrangedwith the portions 6 and 6 parallel with the planes of the respective strings or lengths of fence which they are to connect. It will'be understood that the improved post may be arranged either at the corner, that is, the said posts may be usedto connect two lines of fence extending at a right angleor theymay be used at the ends of a single straight line of fence. In the former case the portions 6' and 6 of the'post are parallel. with the planes of the respective lines of fence, but offset inwardly with respect to these planes in such manner that were the wires 1 of the strings extended they would pass outside of the portions 6 and 6 of the post; In the latter instance, the post is arranged with one of the portions bearingthe above-mentioned relation to the line of fence.
When used at the corner the post is braced .in both direction in the manner shown in Fig. 1, that is, an inclined brace 8 is arranged between the post and a block 9, embedded in the ground." The upper end of the brace is secured to the post, near the top.

where the second line of fence is designated at 1 and 2, the post will also be braced against this second line 1 a of fence, and
in practically the same manner as it is braced against the line 1-2.
Each of the platesor panels 3 is provided in the opposite side edge from the openings 4 with a series of openings 14, and each opening 14 is engaged by an eye or hook 15 on one end of an eye'bolt 16. The other end of each eye bolt is passed through the extended end of a plate 17 which is secured to the post by rivets or the like. Each of these plates 17 to which'the line of fence 1 is connected is secured to the outer face of the portion 6 of the post, and the plate is of such length that it will extend transversely of this portion, and will extend beyond the portion at the portion 6, and the extender end has'an opening through which the extended end of the bolt is passed. A nut 18 is threaded on to the eye bolt at the outer face of the plate, and it will be evident that when the nuts 18 are tightened, the plate 3 will be drawn toward the post. The plates 17 for the line of fence 1 -2 are secured to the outer face of the portion 6 of the post, in precisely the same manner as the plates 17 on the portions 6.
In the present instance four bolts 16 are provided for each line of fence, and the openings 11 in the plates 3 of the two lines are so arranged that they may engage their respective plates 17 with the upper end of the plate 3 flush with the top of the post. As many of the eye bolts 16 may be used as may be found advisable, but with a fence of ordinary height four bolts are sufficient to hold the fence firmly in place.
In use, the post being seated and braced as shown and described, the bolts 16 are passed through the openings in the plates 17 and each bolt is engaged by its nut 18 to hold it in place. Commencing now at either end, the nuts 18 are tightened, until there is suflicient tension of the wires 1 and 1 The fence is now complete, and should there be sagging for any reason this may be compensated for by turning the nuts 18 in the proper direction. The braces 8 and 10 are bolted to the post, and the rods 16 are threaded throughout practically their entire length in order to permit the greatest possible amount of adjustment.
I claim Means for stretching two sides of an in closing fence at the corner, thesame consisting of a fixed angle post disposed with the angle formed between the wings facing inward, plates attached to the outer face of one of the wings and projecting outwardly beyond the outer face of the second wing, other plates secured to the outer face of the second wing and projecting beyond the outer face of the first mentioned wing, the
projecting ends of the two sets of plates having openings, two bars having the ends of the respective sides of the fence attached thereto, longitudinally movable tensioning members mounted in the apertured ends of the two sets of plates and connected at their inner ends to the respective bars, and means coacting with the outer ends of the tensioning members and with the apertured ends of the respective plates for moving the bars I and stretching the two sides of the inclosing fence. 7
