UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID L. KEELER, OF' GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.-
HOUSEHOLD FIRVE-EXTINGUQISHINGY APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,591, dated December 25, 1894. Application filed May 16, 1892. Serial No. 433,220. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID L. KEELER, a oitizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Household Fire-Extinguishing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a household fireextinguishing apparatus.
. My object is to provide an article, which affords a convenient repository for various articles useful in putting out fire in its incipient state, and at the same time is useful as a seat, ottoman, or footstool, and the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arran gement of the various parts hereinafter described aud particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accom pan ying drawings, wherein- Figure 1, represents a perspective of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a plan of the same with the covers removed to show the interior; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the same on the line 3- 3, and Fig. 4, a vertical section on the line 44.
A. represents a box of any convenient form or size, mounted upon posts or legs A. or other suitable supports and is divided by vertical partitions into compartments K. K. K. The central compartment K. is provided with a cover E. preferably of paper, or other easily broken non porous material, glued at its margins to the top edges of said compartment so as to hermetically seal the same and prevent air from reaching the powdered fire tached by dowel pins F. F. and is easily detachable by lifting vertically but cannot be removed bylateral movement. Around the outer edge of cover D. is tacked a rim G. of cloth or other suitable material for iuclosing the blanket H. to keep it from slipping ofif,
and the whole is covered bya sack B of cloth or other suitable material which may be ornamented by a fringe or in any suitable manner and is provided with a handle 0..
It will now be seen thatthe article as thus constructed, forms an ottoman or foot stool. The folded blanket I-I forms a cushion, and is always readily accessible for use in smothering a fire. A common and not infrequent source of fire in dwellings is gasoline, oil or naphtha stoves, and when fire catches from this cause it frequently communicates to the clothing of persons near by, and my device is immediately available in cases of accidents of this sort.
The blanket H. is used to smother the flames upon the person. The paper cover E of the compartment K may be broken in, and the dry material J thrown upon the fire by the scoop I, or the liquid in the bottles used if preferred.
The'utility of the device is obvious.
'I claim- .1. In an apparatus of the class described the combinationof the box A. mounted upon legs A., and having a compartment K. having a hermetically sealed cover E. of some easily broken material, preferably paper, and a strong detachable cover D. resting on the cover E., and the sack cover B. inclosing and forming a covering for the device, substantially as set forth.
2. In anapparatus of the classdescribed, the combination of the box A. mounted upon legs A. andhaving a hermetically sealed .compartment K. with a cover E. and detachable cover D., provided with a rim G., the blanket 1-1. and cover B. arranged substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
3. As an improved article of manufacture the apparatus herein described consisting of the box A, mounted on suitable supports, having a compartment K provided with a hermetically sealed easily broken cover E and one or more compartments K having inclined bottoms M and a cover D provided with dowel pins F. and having a rim G of flexible material for holding the blanket H. and a sack-cover B having a handle 0. arranged substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination of the box A., having B. arranged substantially as described and [0 one or more compartments K'., having infor the purposes set forth. clined bottoms M., the cover D. and the sack In testimony whereof I affix my signature in cove13., arranged substantially as described presence of two witnesses. and or the purposes set forth. 1
5. The combination with the box A. having DAVID KELLER one or more inclined bottoms M., and the Witnesses: cover D. having the rim G. of flexible mate- DENNIS L. ROGERS, rial, for holding the blanket H. and the cover L. V. MOULTON.
