\VILIIUI MORROW AND WILLIAM SYMING'ION, OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
COMBINED WATElR COOL ER AND FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,366, dated November 19, 1889.
Application filed February 28, 1888. Serial No. 265,563. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
lie it known that we, \VILLIAM Monnow and WILLIAM SYMINGTON, of Kansas City, \Vyandotte county, Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lVatcr-Coolers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Our invention relates to portable devices which can be moved from place to place, and which are adapted to either cool or filter or both cool and filter water that is placed within the receptacle; and it may be said to consist in the peculiar arrangement, construction, and combination of parts hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined cooler and filter constructed after our invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a modification thereof. 4
A indicates a suitable reservoir or receptacle for the water, which is made, preferably, of closely-woven canvas and suspended by means of its upper edges within a suitable supporting-frame B, having vertical legs 0, which latter rest upon the floor or other surface. It will be observed that this receptacle A is in the form of a sort of bag, having its lower end closed and its upper end open and its upper edges secured to the horizontal bars of the frame by means of tacks a or other suitable devices. It is also provided at one end or side with a suitable faucet D or a plug of any kind, so that the contents of the receptacle may be withdrawn for use whenever required. Said faucet may be secured to the flexible sides of the receptacle or connected therewith in any suitable manner, although we prefer to attach a wooden block 20 to one side or end of the receptacle on the interior thereof and locate the faucet in a suitable aperture made in the block and in the flexible material, as shown.
The receptacle A may either be in the form of a bag with flexible sides and bottom, or it may be provided with a wooden bottom, such as 25. (Shown in Fig. 2.) Said receptacle is provided upon its interior with a canvas partition E, which divides it into two compartments, and the upper chamber is to be supplied with a filtering materialsuch as charcoal-and the lower chamber is left open and free for the filtered liquid to drop or pass into. This canvas partition is secured to the flexible sides of the receptacle in any suitable way by sewing or otherwise.
lVith this construction the operation of the invention will be as follows: \Vater placedin the upper chamber wets or dampens the canvas sides and passes through the filtering material located on the partition E and drops into the lower chamber, to be withdrawn by way of faucet D whenever required, said partition being of course formed of canvas that is comparatively coarse and open.
In this cooler, it will be particularly observed, no ice or other refrigerant is made use of, the cooling being accomplished by evaporation of the liquid or vapor located upon the outer surface of the receptacle A, it being obvious that this surface will be in a damp condition whenever water is located within, the canvas walls being somewhat porous and permitting a small amount of liquid to pass through them.
For drinking purposes a cool and refreshing drink of water will be provided by the use of this device, and the temperature will not be reduced to icy coldness, but will be just sufficiently cool to make it agreeable and pleasant.
o are aware that a cooling-bueket made of canvas has been used for the purpose of cooling water, and We do not therefore claim such as our invention; but,
Having thus described our invention, whatwe claim is- 1. The improved water-cooler consisting of the combination of the frame B, having the legs 0, the water-receptacle A, having flexible and porous sides, the upper end of which receptacle is open and is securely affixed to said frame, the wooden bottom 25, which closes the lower end of the water-receptacle, and a suitable faucet, as D, secured to the lower portion of said water-receptacle, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the frame I), having the legs G, the Water-receptacle A, having Intestimonywhereof We affix our signatures flexible and porous sides, the upper end of in presence of two witnesses. which receptacle is open and securely affixed to said frame, the canvas partition E, secured WILLIAM MORROW. 5 midway in said receptacle and adapted to WILLIAM SY'MINGTON.
