AIR-OOLING APPARATUS.
No. 191,710. Patented June 5,1877.
CHARLS PFANNE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN AIR-CCOLING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l9l.,7l0, dated June 5, 1877 application tiled May 2, 1877.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLs PFANNE, of Washington, in the county of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Cooling, Disinfecting, and Deodorizing Rooms 5 and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specilication, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my device as arranged for use, and Fig. 2 is a section of the same upon line x x of Fig. l.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each ofthe figures.
The design of my invention is to enable a room to be easily and thoroughly deodorized, disinfected, or cooled; to which end it consists in a screen covered with textile fabric, or other suitable absorbent material, and pro vided with means for supplying liquid to the upper end of said covering, and having at its lower end a pan to receive the drip of such liquid, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the base; B and B, the vertical side rails; and C the top rail, which together form the frame of my screen. The said side rails B are preferably made widest at their lower ends, and each is provided with an opening, c, that extends nearly to each end. A series of bars, D,
. extend horizontally between said rails at suitable points between their upper and lower ends, and serve to strengthen the frame, and also to prevent accidental contact between the clothing of occupants of the room in which the screen is placed and the covering or dia phragm, hereinafter described.
Suspended from the lower side of the top rail C is a trough, E, which has a V shape in cross-section, and is placed in communica tion with a reservoir, F, that is placed upon the upper side of said rail, and is provided with a valve, j, or other suitable means for opening and closing communication between its interior and said trough.
Within the lower side of the trough E are a number of small openings, e, through which its liquid contents can escape, while immediately below said trough is suspended a round bar, G, that receives and sustains a strip of cloth or other absorbent material, H, which from thence passes downward beneath a similar bar, l, that is placed near the base A, and from thence upward to said bar G again.
A pan, K, placed beneath the lower end of the cloth H, and having sufcient horizontal dimensions to cause it to catch any liquid which might drip from the same, completes the device, the operation of which is as follows:
The liquid to be used is supplied to the reservoir F, and the valve j' so adjusted as to permit the necessary quantity to flow into the trough E, from whence said liquid passes downward to the cloth H, and by force of gravity passes down the sides ofthe same.
When it is necessary that a considerable quantity of water should be used, as for cooling purposes, a suiicient quantity may be permitted to ow from the reservoir to thoroughly saturate the cloth and drip from the same into the pan; but for deodorizing and disinfecting purposes it will be found most advantageous to permit no more water to flow than will be evaporated from said cloth without causing drip.
If desired, the reservoir may be omitted, and the trough connected by means of a flexible tube, with the fixed waterfpipes of a house, or with any permanent source of supply.
The device described furnishes a means whereby a room can be easily and conveniently cooled, its offensive odors neutralized, or danger from infectious diseases of its occupants prevented.
I am aware that it is not new to cool air by passing it through a fabric which is arranged horizontally, and saturated with liquid that passes downward from the upper edge of said fabric, and therefore do not claim the same, broadly.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is- As a means for deodorizing, disinfecting, or
cooling a room, a portable screen, covered have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of with absorbent material, and provided with April, 1877.
means for supplying liquid to the upper end of the same, and having at its lower end a pan to receive the drip of such liquid, substan- Witnesses:
t-ially as specified. JAS. E. HU'rcnrNsoN, In testimony that I claim the foregoing I HENRY C. HAZARD.
CHARLS PFANNE.
