IMPROVEMENT'IN APPARATUS FOR DRYING MOIST BOOTS AND MITTENS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,070, dated September 17, 1878 application filed March 29, 1878.'

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F, BUXTON, of Brookfield, in the county of Orange and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved'Apparatus for Drying Moist Boots and Mittens, of which the followingis a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved device for drying moist boots and mittens, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on line 00 m, Fig. l.

This invention is intended to furnish, for the use of farmers and others, an improved device or apparatus by which moist rubber and other boots, shoes, mittens, and similar articles may be dried in a perfect manner without any objectionable odor in the room, so as to furnish them in a dry state when they are required for use, and not necessitating their being worn in a moist and cold state, as at present. 7

The invention consists of a box having drafttube connected to the chimney and bottom tubes with lower perforated elbows, adjustable end pieces, and suspension devices for the boots or shoes, so that the draft established at the interior of the same draws off the moisture and odor to the outside.

Referring to the drawing, A represents a box of suitable size, that is hung by brackets to the wall, or supported in any other manner, and connected by a draft-tube, B, to the chimney, stove-pipe, or to the outside of the house. To the bottom of the main box A are attached elbow-shaped tubes 0, that are perforated at the lower part and provided witli perforated adjustable ends 0, and' at suitable distance above the perforated lower portions with suspension-hooks D, or equivalent devices, that may be adjusted into higher or lower position on the tubes 0 by suitable spring-clamps.

The boots and shoes are hung by their straps to the suspension-hooks, the perforated and elbow-shaped ends of the tubes being then at the interior of the boots or shoes, so that the warm air of the room passes in between the boot-legs and the tubes 0, and is drawn 011' through the lower perforated ends of the tubes, main box, and draft-tube to the chimney, so as to conduct any disagreeable odor from the rooms to the outside. The elbow-tubes may be of a square or round cross section, and rounded off or angular at the elbows, as desired. I

On the top of the main box A is placed a supplementary box, E, with hinged front door, interior perforated shelf, and an opening below the shelf for the entrance of warm air. A top tube, E, connects the supplementary box E with the draft-tube B of the main box. The supplementary box serves for the purpose of drying mittens and other small articles in the same manner as the boots are dried, by creatin g a draft of warm air from the room through the interior of the box E and conducting the vapors and odors to the outside.

The apparatus may be adjusted for different sizes of boots, and forms a convenient drying arrangement for all those who wear rubber or other boots and mittens, that are exposed to dampness and moisture, so as to furnish them in dry and comfortable condition when required for use.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent' v 1. The combination of the main box, connected by draft-tube to the chimney, with bottom elbow-tubes, that are perforated at the lower parts and provided with adjustable perforated extensions and adjustable suspension devices, substantially as and for the purpose described.
