No. 583,652. Patented June 1,1897.
. I If NITED ST TES ATENT Fries.
PORTABLE REFRlGERATlNG-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,652, dated June 1, 1897.
Application filed September 29, 1896. Serial No. 607,356 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER L. MULLIGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Refrigerating Refreshment-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in portable inclosed cases or boxes for lunches, bottled goods, or other articles, the objects being to provide a simple case of the kind indicated which by reason of its construction and equipment is very convenient, compact, effective in preserving the contained ice against rapid melting and easily discharged of the water accumulating from the melted ice, and which is capable of being readily cleansed, and also to provide means for the reception and retention of a corkscrew and collapsible drinking-cup; and to these ends the invention consists in constructions and combinations of parts, all substantially as will hereinafter fully appear, and be set forth in. the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which the improved case is illustrated, Figure 1 being a perspective view of the same with the cover thereof open. Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
In the drawings, A represents the case or box, which may be advantageously made of tin and of rectangular shape, having near its upper edge the surrounding rib a, and having the hinged cover B, which closely shuts down on said rib, the top" of the cover being above the upper edge of the case.
Somewhat above the bottom of the case A are the rests b, and through the side or end of the case near the bottom is the dischargeopening d, closed by the removable screw-cap f or otherwise.
represents the removable receptacle for containing the articles to be stored or carried and to be kept cold. This is in the form of a rectangular tank, the length and breadth of which are less than that of the case A, and it is provided with the bottom g, which projects at the sides thereof so as to about fit within the case A, the so-produced flange-like bottom extensions 9 being supported on said rests b, and all so that there is a space 10 below, air-spaces 12 12 entirely around, and when the cover is closed an air-space 13 above the receiver C. The said bottom 9 has a series of apertures or perforations g The cover at its inside is provided with the socket h, in which a corkscrew t' is retained, and the cover at its inside also has the tin strap-like part j secured thereto, providing a very simple and efficient means for the retention of a case 1%, which contains a collapsible drinking-cup m or for retaining the collapsed drinking-cup itself.
The cover has on its top the strap-handle n, and a fastening device p is provided for locking the box closed at its edge opposite its hinges.
As an example of the availability and utility of my improved case the removable receptacle may receive therein several bottles of beer, coffee, milk, or other liquid refreshment, upon, between, or around which may be placed ice, and in addition lunch may be stored in the said receptacle above the ice. As the ice melts, the water passes through the perforations in the bottom of receptacle 0 to the bottom of case A and may be drawn off at pleasure through the aforesaid discharge-opening.
The air-spaces entirely around the receiver 0 measurably prevent the transmission of heat to the ice within the receiver, and it has been found in practice that with afew pounds of ice in the receptacle therefor the desired lowtemperature has been maintained for a surprisingly long period even in very hot weather.
The corkscrew and collapsible cup, together with the means for receiving and retaining them, lend much to the value and utility of the case.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
-The outer case A, provided with the cover B, means for withdrawing water, and the my invention 1 have signed my name, in presrests 11, secured in its bottom, combined with ence of two witnesses, this 4th day of Septemthe inner case or receiver 0, having openings ber, 1896.
9 through its bottom, and having the exten- WVALTER L. MULLIGAN. 5 sions 9 around its edges, substantially as itnesses:
shown. WM. S. BELLOWS,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as L. B. ALLEN.
