WATER-CLOSET CABINET FOR INFANTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 16, 1909.
Application filed December 15, 1908. Serial No. 67,719.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GUs'rAF JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kaleva, in the county of Manistee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Water-Closet Cabinet for Infants, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an infants cabinet or closet and the object of the invention is to produce a construction which will enable the infant to support his body in an easy position while he is seated.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective of a cabinet constructed according to my invention and showing the cabinet open as in use; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the cabinet in its closed or folded position.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the body of the cabinet, which is in the form of a vertically elongated box provided with a seat 2 at aconvenient height, and beneath which a chamber 3 may be placed upon the bottom 4 as indicated. The cabinet is provided with a swinging front door 5 which is attached by hinges 6 to the left side wall 7.
To the upper edge of the rear wall 8, a cover or lid 9 is attached by suitable hinges 10. This cover is adapted to be secured in its closed position by a latch 11 on the front door, as indicated in Fig. 2.
On the inner side of the front door 5, a tray or shelf 12 is attached by fastening devices 13. These fastening devices may consist simply of staples which are attached to an upwardly-projecting rail or rim 14 which extends continuously around three sides of the tray, as indicated. The tray is normally folded up against the inner side of the door, in which position it is held by a suitable body 15 attached on the door and engaging a stud 16 on the free edge of the tray.
When the cabinet is in use, the cover 9 is raised and the door 5 is thrown wide open so as to admit the infant. After the infant has been seated, the tray is let down and holds itself in a horizontal position. The door 5 is then placed in approximately the position shown, so that the tray projects across the open front of the cabinet. The tray is then operated as a rest or guard for the infant to lean forward upon. If desired, toys may be placed on the tray to amuse the infant. The tray will be constructed and hun in a substantial manner so as to support t e infant s weight if he should lean heavily upon it.
The shelf or tray 12 should be at a convenient height above the seat. The lower edge of the door 5 should rest upon the floor so that the door will not tend to fly open too freely.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A cabinet of the class described, con1- prising a body with fixed sides, having a seat within the same, said body having a movable door normally closing the front thereof with a rest attached thereto adapted to project across the front of said body when said door is open.
2. A cabinet of the class described, comprising a body having a seat, a swinging door attached to said body, and adapted to swing outwardly, and a tray constituting a rest attached to said door and adapted to fold against the inner face thereof to permit the said door to close.
3. A cabinet of the class described, having a body with a seat thereon, a cover on said body adapted to be raised, and a swinging front door having a folding shelf supported solely by said door.
4. A cabinet of the class described, comprising a body having a seat therein, a swinging door for the front of said cabinet, a folding shelf attached to the inner side of said door and adapted to fold up against the inner face thereof, and means for holding said shelf in its folded position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GUSTAF JOHNSON.
