UNITED STATES "PATENT" OFFICE.
THOMAS E. CLEVELAND, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
Y ciolv smo SALT A\ND PEPPER CUP..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,628, dated October 30, 1883.
Application filed March 5,1883. (No model.) I
To aZZ whom it Hwy concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. CLEVELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Salt and Pepper Cups; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains toimake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a vessel capable of holding two or more kinds of spices, 850., separately, and with means for discharging the same either separately or together at the pleasure of the user.
The invention consists of avessel having two or more compartments and a cover adapted to admit the passage therethrough of the contents of either or both of the said compartments at Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 shows the cup dividedintofour compartments.
In carrying out my invention I construct a receptacle divided into two or more compartments by the partition a, each for different substances-es, for instance, the compartment 12 may contain salt and compartment 0 may contain pepper. The cover d is constructed of suitable material, and has a downward-projecting double flange, e, Fig. 1, said flange fitting over the partition a, as shown in Fig. 1, thus shutting off all communication between thev compartments 1) and a, so that the contents of one side willnot mix with that of the other in the receptacle. The said cover (I has perforations therein communicating with the separate compartments 1) and c, Fig. 1. I The said perforations may be made so as to indicate the contents of the compartments beneath them. For instance, the perforations over the salt-compartment may'represent the letter S and those over the pepper-compartment the letter P, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This is not necessary when the body of the vessel is'made of transparent or translucent material, as it may be. In order that the discharge of the inclosed substances may be regulated, I provide asemicircular rotating cover, f, Figs. 1 and 2, having projectionsthereon, as at f, Fig. 2, so that the .said rotating cover maybe conveniently turned bythe thumb, whereby either the salt or pepper can be thrown out through the per=v forations separately by covering the side containing the substance that is not required; or, if it be'necessary or desirable to use both substances at once, the said rotating cover can be turned so as to cover half of the perforations 011 each side, as will be readily understood.
In constructing my salt and pepper cup I prefer to use a transparent material, as glass,
but do not wish to limit myself to that material. 7 5 When glass is used, the partition a may be blown in or the sides of the cup may be recessed, so as'to admit of the insertion of a par tition. Instead of the downward-proj ecting flange e, the partition a maybe carried up to the cover and conform thereto, asin Fig. '4, thus making a tight joint. 'The cover may be held on the cup, when the partition is thus car ried up, by a pin and slot device.
The body of the cup or 'vessel may be devided into two or more compartments, as
' shown in Fig. 5. The rotating cover f, when -turned,will remain stationary in whatever position it is placed, as is evidentifrom the construction.v i
I am aware that salt and pepper cups have been made having two or more compartments and a perforated cover and means for regulating the outflow of the contents of said compartments. Such construction I do not claim, broadly.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new is- 1.- A compartment-vessel for use as a salt and pepper cup, having the partition a and perforate cover d, and provided with theimperforate half-cover f,pivoted upon the perforate cover, and adapted to be tulned to allow a free discharge from either compartment or a partial discharge from both compartments.
2. A combination spice-box having several compartments and a cover provided with separate perforations for each compartment, said perforations indicating the contents of the latter, and a half imperforato cover, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have ary, 1883.
