Description
PATENTE'D DEC. 27, 1 70.
E. S.- KENNEDY.
SPICE BOX.
l illtfitll sac iglattnt affine EDWARD s. KENNEDY, or. BIRMINGHAM, (BUCHANAN POST orrlcn PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 110,473, dated December 27, 1870;
IMPROVEMENT .lN SPICE-BOXES.
To alt whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, EDWARD S. KENNEDY, of Birmingham, .(Buchanan post office,) in the county of Allegheuy and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spice-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being. bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- I Figure 1 is adetail sectional view of my improved spice-box. v Jfigure 2 is detail cross-section of the same taken through the line a x, fig. 1.
f Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an im-' proved spice-box, which shall be so constructed as to contain salt and pepper, or two other spices, and which shall at the same time be simple in construction and conyenientin use; and
.Itconsists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the device as hereinafter more fully described.
-A represents the box or receptacle, which is made with a compartment in each end, to contain the salt and pepper or other spices.
Jlhe box A may be made of glass or otherisuitable material; but when made of glass should have a metallic band around its middle part, to receive the pivots B, by which the said box A may be pivoted 'to a stand, (3.
The stand 0 is formed of a U-shaped standard, 0,
and base, 0 the arms of the standard projecting up upon the opposite sides of the Box A, and have bearings formed in them to receive the pivots B.
The upper part of the bearings is made detachable, and is secured with ascrew, so that the box may be readily detached when desired.
The box A may be used without the stand 0 when desired. v
- In this case the pivots B may be omitted, or rcplaced by or changed into a handle.
The mouth of the compartment that is designed to contain the salt may be made larger than the mouth of the other compartment, so as to give a more abundant discharge to the substance, of which a greater quantity is used. V
Upon the mouths of the compartments of the box A are placed caps D, which may be secured in place by means of a screw-thread in the said cap fitting into a screw-thread formed upon the end of the said box, as shown in the case of the smaller cap D. Or the caps D may be formed to fit closely upon the ,end of the box, so as to be held by friction, as shown in the caseof the larger cap D.
' The plate of the caps D is perforated with holes, through which the salt and pepper or other spice may escape. I E are disks or plates placed within the caps D, and pivoted at theirc'enters to the centers of the tops of the said caps D by a rivet.
Upon-the edge of the plates E is formed an arm, E, which projects through a slit in the sides of the caps D, and by means of which the said plates E may be adjusted.
The plates E are perforated with holes correspond .ing' in number, size, and posit-ion with the holes through the caps D, so that when the said plates E are turned into one position the discharge-openings may be wholly closed, and when the said plates are turnedinto the other position the contents of the box may be discharged freely.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentv 1. The spice-box A, made with two compartments and provided with caps D and adjustable perforated plates 19' E, whether used with or without a stand,
substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the. box A, made with two compartments, caps D, perforated pivot-ed plates E F, pivots 13,-and stand 0, with each other, said parts being constructed and operating substantially as herein shown auddescrihed, and for the purpose set forth.
' EDWARD S. KENNEDY.
