INVENTEIR; Wffa UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
EDWARD NoLDEN, or BoSroN, MASSACHUSETTS.
BATHING APPARATUS.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of- Letters Patent No. 423,801, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed December 6, 1889. Serial No. 332,755. (No model To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that'I, EDWARD NOLDEN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bathing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of bathing apparatus comprising a portable tub, a pump having a iiexible tube and arranged to be operated by a person standing in t-he tub for the purpose of forcing a stream of water through Said tube, the latter being adapted to be held by the bather so as to direct th'e stream against any part of his body, and a frame supporting a screen which conceals the bather.
The invention has for its object to provide certain improvements in the details of construction of apparatus of this class, whereby a durable, strong, and simple apparatus is secured which can be readily taken apart and compactly folded.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved bathing apparatus, the screen being shown as partially displaced. Fig. 2 represents a perspective View of a part of the tub and one of the sockets attached thereto. Fig. 3 represents a top view of the tub. Fig. et representsa sectional view of a part of the apparatus.
The same letters and `figures of reference indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
In the drawings, a represents a shallow tub, preferably of circular form. b b represent cast-metal sockets attached to the bottom of the tub at opposite sides thereof to receive and hold the vertical standards c c', hereinafter described. Each socket is composed of a base portion 2, having a ange 3, which is secured by bolt t and screws 5 5 to the bottom of the tub, the vertical bars 6 6 extending upwardly from said base portion and separated from each other by an open Space 7, and the upper portion 8 supported by said vertical bars. The lower ends of the standards cc are inserted in said sockets, the latter supporting the standards in the vertical position shown in Fig. 1. To the standard c is attached by means of Sheet-metal straps 9 9 a tube 10, constitutinga pump-barrel, the lower end of which projects below the lower end of the standard c', so that it enters a socket c, prepared for it in the bottom of the tub near one of the sockets l). The barrel 10 has an outlet-tube f, communicating with its interior near its lower end and extending upwardly between the barrel and the standard c', the said tube bearingfagainst the standard c' and being held in place by said standard at one side, by t-he barrel on the other side, and by the straps 9 9, that Secure the barrel to the standard c. The lower portion of the outletetube f projects into the Space 7 be tween the socketbars 6 6, said space being provided for the purpose of receiving the outlet-tube, so that, although the socket extends above the lower end of the outlet-tube, the latter does not require to be bent from its psition of contact with the standard c to avoid the socket b, that receives said standard.
The pump-barrel is provided with a suitable valve j, a piston t', and a 4rod therefor, said rod having a handle k, arranged to be grasped by a person standing in the tub.
m represents a flexible tube or hose having a spraying nozzle or rose o and connected to the upper end of the outlettube, so that the operator, holding the hose in one hand and operating the pump with the other hand, may direct a stream of water in any desired direction against his body.
The socket or depression e in the bottom of the tub enables the operator to pump all the water from the tub after bathing, the lower end of the pump-barrel entering said socket, as shown in Fig. l.
The standards c c are provided with hooks S at their upper ends, which are engaged with eyes or staples on a hoop t, which is Suspended by said hooks. The hoopv has a series of hooks u, which enter eyelet-holes in the upper edge of a Sheet fo, of any suitable cloth, which constitutes a screen for the bather and to prevent the scattering of water. Suitable fastening devices applied to the meet ing edges of the screen secure said edges together when the bather desires to be concealed.
w represents a wire basket hung on a hook or stud on one of the Standards to receive a sponge or other toilet article or articles.
The Standards cc are composed of sec- IOO tions 10, connectedby hinges 12, so that they can be readily folded and placed in the tub when not in use. Ahookl on oneendof cach section, excepting the lower one, engaging with an eye or staple on the adjoining section, prevents the sections from swinging on their hinges when they are in position for use.
Itwill be seen that this apparatusis extremely simple and durable, and can be manufactured at a small expense, and can be compactly folded when not in use. VIt is particularly adapted for the use of those who are obliged to bathe in sleeping-apartments or other rooms, whereby the scattering of Waterwould be objectionable, and where theprivacy desired by the bather is liable to be intruded upon.
l. The combination of the tub, the sockets b l), attached thereto, each having an open space 7 at one side, the standards ce', formed to be inserted in said sockets, the pump-barrel secured by straps 9 9 to the standard c', the onilettube located between the barrel and the standard c and projecting into the space 7 in the socket that holds the standard c', a flexible tube or hose attached to the outlet-tube and provided with a suitable nozzle,
and a piston anda rod therefor in the pumpbarrel, all arranged and operating substantially as described.
The combination of the tub, the sockets I) l), attached thereto, each having an open space 7 at one side, the standards cc', formed to be inserted in said sockets and composed of hinged sections, the pump-barrel secured by straps 9 9 to the standard c the outlet-tube located between the barrel and the standard c and projecting.,r into the space 7 in the socket that holds the standard c', a liexible tube or hose attached to the outlet-tube and provided With a' suitable nozzle, and a piston and a rod therefor in the pump-barrel, the hoop engaged with the upper ends of the standards and provided with a series of hooks, and a screen adapted to be secured to said hooks, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, this 30th day ofi November, A. D. 1889.
