TAMAR c. IIUMPIIREY, on HILL cITY, KANSAS;
AVAPO'FI-BATH.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofV Letters Patent No. 441,761, dated December 2, 1890.
Application filed June 18,1890. Serial No. 355,858. (No model.) l
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that LTAMAR G. HUMPHREY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Hill City, in the c ounty of Graham and State of Kansas, have Invented a new andA useful Vapop-Bath, of which the following is a speciliea Ion.
This invention has relation to vapor-baths;
and the objects in view are to provide an economically-constructed and simple apparatus of neat and tasteful design and adapted to serve as and have the appearance of a piece view, the apparatus being in position for use as a bath. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective of the Inner or movable casing. Fig; 5 is a detail In perspective of the chair or stool. Fig. 6 is a detail in perspective of the spraying-reser- Voir.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
' In practicing my invention I provide a case 1, preferably formed of wood and provided with a metallic lining, said casing being mounted upon casters 2, whereby it is de. signed to be removed with facility. The cas- I ing is covered ordinarily by a dat cover 3, or
the same Inay be of any ornamental design, but in the present instance is designed to lend the appearance of an ordinary {iat-topped table. From tle opposite sides at one end of the casing there extend a pair of arms 4, in which is journaled a drum-shaft 5, provided at one end with an operating-crank `6. Above the drum-shaft the edge of the casing is provided with, in this instance, three cutaway portions or recesses, and in each there is journaled a pulley 7, over which extend ropes or chains 8, the outer ends of which are made fast to the drum at different points. The
drum also is provided with a ratchet' 9, the
around the neck of the patient.
teeth of which are engaged by a gravity-pawl 10, pivoted to the side of the casing.
11 designates the inner casing,vwhich is The inner a coverl, provided with hooks 14, which take into eyes 15, projecting from the edges of the sidewalls. The top of the casing is covered by a longitudinally-divided cover 16, the same being formed of two sections seated upon the aforesaid cleats 12, and at their adjacent edges each cover is provided with a semicircular opening, the two openings combining to form a circular opening 17, designed to fit The front wall of the casing 1l, or rather that portion which remains after-the cutting away thereof, is provided with a soap and sponge rack 18, and the outer casing lis provided with a pair of guides 19, in which .is mounted for vertical movement a sliding door 20. 1 y
The steam may be admitted to the apparatus in any ordinary manner; but for. the
purpose of convenience I prefer to employ a small gasoline or gas stove 21, upon which is mounted a suitable boiler 22, provided at its top with a removable cover 23a'nd a steamescape 24. A pair of steam-pipes 25 lead from the upper portion of the boiler, and by suitable bends or elbows are brought into register. with and enter a pair of openings 26, formed in the side wall of the casings. The supply of steam may be easily regulated .by the-admis'- sion of oil tothe stove, whereby the heat may beldecreased or intensified, as required, and also by a raising of the lid of the boiler, thus permitting the steam to escape when being formed too rapidly for the convenience and safety of the patient. Y
A small opening 27 is formed in the top 16 at one corner, and through the same depends a vertical pipe 28, the upper end of which connects with aV spraying-reservoir 29.v` The lower end of the pipe' 28fis provided with an elbow 30, which rests upon and is supported by abracket 31, secured to the interior of the IOO inner casing 11, and connected to the elbow is a iexible hoseseetion 32 of suitable len gth,
ijwhich section terminates in a spraying-nozzle 33.
rlhe bottom of the casing l1 is provided with a surrounding fiange Si, which has secured. to its under side strips 35 of rubber packing, whereby a steam-tight connection is made bctween the inner and cuter casin gs. The ange is provided on its opposite sides and at its rear end with eyes 36, and above the side eyes the inner face of the casing is provided with pulleys 37. The central cord, chain, or rope 8 leading from the drum connects with the rear eye, and the two side cords or chains pass over the guide-pulleys just mentioned and connect with the two side eyes, so that by a lnanipulation of the drum the inner -casing may be raised and lowered in accordance with the height of the person undergoing treatment. j
The stool herein employed is preferably adjustable, and in this instance comprises the opposite pair. of cross-bars 39, connected by suitable connecting-bars 40, the upper ends of a pair of said bars 39 being connected by a transverse bar 41. The opposite pair of bars '39 terminate in tenons 42, and over the same is introduced a removable perforated bar 43. The fabric forming the seat 44 is connected to the two bars,'and the bar 43 may be removed and a portion of the same rolled thereupon, as will be apparent, so that the area of the seat is decreased, which at the same time increases the height of the stool. Afoot-rest 45, the same being open,is secured to the iioor ot the outer casing, and under the same is passed the hose-section, which section is provided with a suitable cut-oit 46, whereby the patient may turn on and off and otherwise control the spray.
If desired, the spray or the vapor baths alone may be used, or both combined, the spray to follow the vapor-bath and serve to gradually lower the temperature of the patient until the same is normal, and thus obviate the liability of taking cold after leaving the bath.
To operate the apparatus the cover 3 is removed and the inner casing elevated, so as to permit the entrance of the patient, which is accomplished through the sliding door 2O and by a removal of the covers 13 and 16. After the patient has been placed in position the cover 13 is replaced and the apparatus carefully adjusted so that the covers 16 will inclose the neck of the patient when sitting. The covers 16 are now placed in position and a towel or oth er suitable packing placed about the neck of the patient, so as to practically form a steam-tight joint and maintain the steam within the apparatus. The body may now be treated to a vapor-bath of heat and moisture and at the same time the patient breathe perfectly pure air. The Water in the boiler, and in fact that in the reservoir 29, may be either plain ormedicated,as maybe desired.
After the bath has been given the inner casing is lowered, the stove boiler andreservoir removed, together with the connecting-pipes, amand the cover 3 replaced, whereby the apparatus is transformed from an unsightly bathtub to what mightbe considereda handsome piece of furniture.
Having described my invention, what I claim isl. In 'a bathing apparatus of the class described, the combination, with an outer closed casing, of an inner bottomless casing having a movable top mounted for vertical movement therein, a drum-shaft located at one side of the outer casing, a pawl and ratchet and crank for operating the same, and a series of ropesV or chains connected at their outer ends to the drum-shat`t and over su1t able guides and at their inner ends connected to the inner casing, substantially as specified.
2. In a bathing apparatus of the class described, the combination, with an outer closed casing provided with a door and an inner vertically-adjustable bottomless casing providedlwith a door, of mechanism forraisingand lowering and locking in position said inner casing, substantially as specified.

4. In a bathing apparatus of the class described, the combination, with an outer casing provided with a sliding door, of an inner casing provided at its front with an opening, and a removable cover formed in sections and provided at its adjacent edges with semicircular openings adapted to iit the neck of the patient, substantially as specified.
5. In a bath apparatus, the combination, with an outer closed casing and an` inner sliding 'bottomless casing, each of said casings being provided withdoors, and a suitable packing between the two casings, of a pair of steam-pipes terminating in the outer casing below the inner casing, substantially as specified.
6. In abathing apparatus, the combination, with an outer casing having a removable cover, a door, and provided with a pair of bearing-arms, and at its upper edge above the arms with recesses, of an inner casing mounted for sliding in the outer casing, provided with a door and with a surrounding packing, eyes located at the opposite sides and at the rear end of the inner casing, pulleys mounted in the recesses and at each side of the inner casing, ropes or chains mounted over the pulleys and connected at their inner ends to the eyes, a drum provided with a IOO tof;
