BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,198, dated June 7, 1898:.
Application filed May 27,1897- To aZZ whom it may concern.-
.Be it known that I, LILIAN MAY ELLIOT, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident sand'boards for educational purposes; and
the object thereof is to provide a device of this character which isso constructed as to be maintained normally in a suspended position against the wall, wherebybut little space is required when the device is not in use, While at the same time it is susceptible of being instantaneously and easily adjusted into operative position when required.
The device is simple in construction, inexpensive, and durable, and it is so constructed that the sand may be constantly contained therein without danger of spilling, whereby the necessity of removing the sand from the The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this "specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved sand-board, illustrating the same-in its open or operative position; and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation thereof, showing the board suspended in its normal position against the wall. I11 the practice of my invention 1 provide, primarily, an ordinary sand-board A. This said board comprises a backing or base a and the board is normally suspended against the wall, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The board also contains a small receptacle a Serial No. 633,344. (No model.)
in one corner thereof for the reception of chalk or crayons.
Upon the top edge of the flange or rim a and to the rear edge of the board a cover F is hinged. This said cover comprises a frame f and a'slab f, composed of slate or other substance adapted for use as a blackboard and having both sides finished, whereby it can be used as a means for illustration either when the board is in an open or a closed position. This said cover is normally held in a closed position by means of aspring-elamp G, whereby the sand contained within the receptacle will not escape when the cover is closed, and the pressure exerted against the flexible binding E will maintain a tight join around the edge of the receptacle.
As a means for supporting the board when it is in an open or operative position, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, I provide swinging brackets H. These brackets comprise members 7?) and h, hinged to each other at their point of juncture, the member 7t being secured to the wall by means of screws 71?, the member h'being supplied at its upper edge with an extended flange 72, upon which the board is supported while the sand is being manipulated.
When the board is not in use, the members h of thebrackets H are folded against the wall, the board being suspended between the brackets in a closed position, as illustrated in Fig. 2, whereby but little space is taken up, while at the same time a blackboard is constantly presented for use.
The necessity of a device of this character will be obvious to teachers and others familiar with present educational methods.
In use, the board will contain a quantity of sand, and the face of the backing a will be painted blue. This blue surface represents water, and the sand represents land, and in using the device the instructor forms the sand into the shape of a map, whereby the study of geography is made very interesting for small children.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
adapted to contain sand and provided with I place a rubber or other flexible binding E,
Having thus described my invention, what As an educational device, a sand-board A,
