SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,610, dated June 19, 189.4. Application filed June 28, 1893. Serial No. 479,003 (No model.) Patented in Canada. February 16, 1893, No. 41,984.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY A. HAGEN, of Berlin, in the county of Waterloo, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts, (for which I have obtained a patent in Canada, No. 41,984, bearing date February 16,18935) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention, which will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, relates to shirts having the placket in the back.

The object of my invention is to close up the placket in the back of the shirt, so as to leave no part of the back of the wearer or underclothing exposed, but completely cover the latter and protect the former, thus adding to the neatness of appearance and comfort of the wearer and to do so at a minimum of expense. I.

Figure 1 is a view of the back of my improved shirt with the placket closed, the dashand dotted-lines indicating the triangular piece inside. Fig. 2 is a similar View, but having one side of the placket turned over to expose the triangular piece and another part broken out for the same purpose, and Fig.3 is a view of the triangular piece.

A is the shoulder piece of the shirt, open at the back, to which the neck band, A, with the usual button holes, a, for a stud, is sewed.

B is the back piece in the upper part of which the opening or vertical placket is made and thus forming in the upper part the two sides I) and b" which are sewed to the shoulder piece, the edges of the said sides being in line with the ends of the shoulder piece and neck band as usual. Both edges of the said sides are lined with overlapping facings B and B", the facing of the overlap, B, extending to the shoulder piece and the facing of the underlap, B", extending over the shoulder piece to the neck band.

being sewed in the said side seam, while the hypotenuse, o", is free and extends from the base or a little above it to the junction of the strip B" with the neck band A. The triangular piece 0, it will be seen, is thus placed underneath and overlapped by the side of the back, this being the neatest in appearance. It will be noticed that said triangular piece does not interfere with the free use of the placket, while it insures a complete closing of the back as long as the neck band is buttoned, should the lower part of the placket stand ever so far apart, and even if the neck band is not buttoned, only a limited portion. of the back of the wearer, immediately below the neck, can be exposed.

I claim as my invention- An improved article of manufacture, con sisting of a shirt having a vertical placket in the back and having a piece forming a right angled triangle secured to the underlapping edge of the placket by one of the. sides adjoining the right angle and extending the full length of said placket to the neck band, and the base or other side of said piece adjoining the right angle secured across the other side of'the back of the shirt opposite to the edge of the placket to which the vertical edge is secured and extending from the base of the placket to the side seam, so that the hypotenuse of said piece is free and extends from'the side seam on one side to the neck band on the other side,substantially as set forth.
