Description

(No Model) I H. L. NORTHROP. GLOVE, 6Z0.
No. 519,198. Y Pate nted May 1, 1894.
INVENTOR.
WITNESSES: 1 3 b ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
HENRY L. NORTHROP, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
GLOVE, ac.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,198, dated May 1, 18941 Application file January 11, 1894:. Serial No. 496,511. (No model.)
the wearing portion of the thumb-piece of the mitten or glove by stamping or cutting out a tongue-piece from the blank, of which the mitten is composed, leaving one end integral therewith and passing it up through a slotway in the thumb-piece and stitching it or securing it upon the exterior thereof for the purpose of giving it additional strength and a greater wearing thickness, and the further object of obviating the necessity of a seam coming next the thumb while in use; and to that end my invention consists-in the several newand novel features of construction hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is aview of the mitten, complete. Fig. 2, is a view of the blank forming the mitten and showing the thumb-piece stamped out and the. thumb blank in dotted lines. Fig. 3, is a view of the thumb blank, enlarged, detached, and showing the slotway. Fig. 4, is a view of the mitten and thumb blank, the tongue being inserted through the slotway thereof.
A- is a mitten or glove blank, of any form desired, the outer end of which is notched or so cut, substantially as shown, that when it is folded laterally it will form an inclosure for the hand or fingers accordingly as it is cut.
-ais a tongue stamped or otherwise cut out upon three sides from that portion of the the body of the glove. preferably cut bell-shape, as by that conbody of the mitten which is usually removed to form the opening to the thumb inclosure, said tongue -a, remaining integral wlth The tongue -a 1s struction it is better adapted to fit over the thumb-piece, for which it is intended. I do not, however, limit myself to this precise construction.
-B is a thumb blank formed substantially as shown in Fig. 3, so that when it is folded and secured on two of its sides it will form an inclosure for the thumb adapted to be secured to the body of the mitten over the opening formed by cutting the tongue a. The blank or thumb piece B is provided with a transverse slot b through which the tongue -Ct-- extends, and is secured to the exterior face of the said thumb piece whereby it forms a reinforcementto the wearing portion of the thumb piece.
What I claim is- 1. Aglove or mitten as a new article of manufacture, comprising the body portion having a tongue out therein and forming an opening for the thumb, a thumb piece having a transverse slot therein and secured in the opening, the tongue extending through the slot in the thumb piece and secured to the exterior face thereof whereby it forms a reinforce.
2. A glove or mitten as a new article of manufacture, comprising a body portion having a bell-shaped tongue out therein, and forming an opening for the thumb, a thumb piece having a transverse slot therein and secured in the opening, the tongue extending through said slot in the thumb piece and secured to the exterior face thereof wherebyit forms a reinforce.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of December, 1893.
