' IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER-MITTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,788, dated J nne 24, 1879 application filed November 23, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADAM GILLINN, of Dansville, in the county of Livingston and State of New York,haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvester-Mitts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in harvester-mitts. Heretofore harvester-mitts have been made with the back and front of the hand and finger of the mitt formed of a single piece of material, the same being formed on the side of the glove. In a mitt made in this manner the back and front of the hand and finger are formed of equal width, and hence a forgette is inserted between the seams on the inner side of the finger and hand portions of the mitt, whichis necessary to impart the required fullness to the finger and hand of the mitt.

This method of manufacturing harvestermitts is objectionable for the following reasons To secure a forgette in place necessitates the provision of two extra pieces of material and of two extra seams being formed to secure such pieces in place. Again, the main seam being formed on the side and flattened part of the mitt is subjected to increased strain and wear, and also is unpleasant to the hand. Further, considerable material is wasted in forming a glove in the manner referred to.

The object of my invention is to obviate the objections above enumerated; and to that end my invention consists in a harvester-mitt havin g the back and front of the hand and finger formed in one piece and joined together by a seam extending from between the hand and finger down the back of the mitt to the wrist of the same, whereby the back portions of the hand and finger are made of greater width than the front portions of the same, and thus the required fullness is imparted to the hand and finger of the mitt without the employment of a forgette for such purpose.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank or pattern from which the mitt is formed. Fig. 2 isa view, in perspective, of the back of the mitt, and Fig. 3 a'plan view of the palm of the same.

A represents the blank or pattern from which the body of the mitt is formed. Blank A is cut from a single piece of material, part B constituting the front, and part 0 the back, of the hand, while part bforms the front, and c the back, of the finger. Part (3, forming the back. of the hand, is of greater width than the front B of the hand, the excess in width being equal to the part D, between the dotted line 0 and the outer or extreme edge, g, of the blank.

When the back G is folded down flat upon the front B the dotted line a will coincide with the line or edge 9 but in order to secure the desired fullness to the hand of the mitt the edge 9 is united with the edge 9, and thus a fullness is imparted to the hand of the glove between the points '5 and 'i, or at the point where the forgette is ordinarily inserted.

The back portion, 0, of the finger of the mitt exceeds in width the front I) by the part d, located between the dotted line. f and the outer edge, h, of the finger, and hence when the back 0 is folded over upon the front b, and the edge h united to the edge h, a fullness is im parted to the inner side of the finger, the same as if a forgette were inserted at such point.

From the foregoing it will be apparent that, instead of securing the desired form of mitt by inserting separate pieces or forgettes between the inner edges of the hand and finger of the mitt, and thus necessitating extra seams and material for such purpose, by my improvement the extra pieces or forgettes are formed as an integral part of the single blank.

The edges F F are sewed together, thus forming a seam on the back of the mitt ex tending from the base of the finger to the wrist, and, as this scam is not subjected to wear or undue strain, mitts thus formed will be more durable than those of ordinary construetion. The body of the blank or pattern is provided with an opening, E, for the attach ment of the thumb G.

My improved mitt, while having the desired form embodied therein, is formed of less number of pieces and seams than those heretofore made, and is of greater durability, while, on the other hand, it can be produced atless cost than those of ordinary manufacture, as the stock iseconomized by the peculiar mannerin which the blanks or patterns are formed.

Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A two-finger harvester mitt or glove, the front and back being formed of a single piece and united by a seam on the back extending from between the fingers to the wrist, the back 2 amass portions of the hand and finger having forgettes formed in single piece therewith, Whereby the desired form is imparted to the mitt or glove without the employment of independent forgettes, and the single seam prevented from undue wear, substantially as set forth.
