No. 517,678. Patented Apr. 3, 1894.

VYARREN L BRADDOCK, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOE. TO
MARCUS C. CLARKAND A. SPENCER COON, OF SAME PLACE.
GARTER ADJ UVSTERSAN o FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,678, dated April 3, 1894. I
- Application filed August 7. 1893. Serial No. 482,497. (No man.)
This invention hasrelation to means for fastening a garter about the leg, giving proper position and direction to the tape or web of the garter, as well also for adjusting the same with reference to legs of varying size and stocklngs of various lengths.
It is the objectof the invention to provide a device for the purposes mentioned, which may be made from a single'length of wire to render its manufacture, economic and simple, and which, at the same time, shall be serviceable and comfortable in a maximum degree. p
To these ends the invention consists of the x impmvement which I will. now proceed to/fl scribe and claim.
Reference is to be had to the annexed drawings and to the letters marked thereon,
forming a part of this specification, the same letters designating the same parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.
Of the drawings: -Figure 1 is a front-view of the lnvention complete, showing it as connected with webs or tapes and in position foruse. Fig. 2 is a like view of the invention detached and drawn to an enlarged scale.
In the drawings a is the tape or Web of the garter which is-provided at one end with a suitable clasp b for fastening it to the stocking 0 of the wearer, and at the other end with a buckle d or other similar device for adjustably connecting the tape or web there-' 40 with, which buckle is provided with a hook e.
The parts so far mentionedinay be of the form shown in the drawings or of any other suited to the purpose.
It is Very desirable'in' garters of. this kind, in order to secure comfort inits use to maintain it in proper position on the leg that it should slope or incline downward to theline whereit is attached to the stocking-that.is,
that it should be higher on the leg opposite the side on which it is connected with the stocking, and slope or incline downward from the higher point to the point on-line ofattachment-and that the web should lie flat at all points. It is to secure these ends, in addition to the advantage mentioned at the outset of this specification, that my invention has been contrived.
. f designates an oblong loop formed from a the eye g the wire is bent downward to form a side bar h which extends at an angle of about forty degrees to the course of the loop f, whence the wire is bent outward on a line substantially parallel with the loop f, as at i, thence the'wire extends upward to the open end of the loop f forming the bearing j. With this construction and arrangement of parts, the tape or web may be passed through the loop f, around the bearing h, over the bearing j and down under the bar 2', which will hold it in place onthe tape or web in position so that the hook 6 can readily be vengaged with the eye 9, and the parts will at all times lie fiat on the leg. Furthermore theangls of the loops and bearings are such as to guide the tapes in exactly the desired direction. It is to be noted, moreover, that the device can readily be moved to anypoint on the tape a, so as to adjust itto legs of varyingv size and to stockings :of different lengths. of its parts and without sharp angle or edge 'it' is not liable to chafe or unduly wear the web, or be rendered uncomfortable to the wearer.
' (Having thus explained the nature of the As the contrivance is smooth'in allat the inner open end of said 1oop,.n bearing name to this specification, in the presence of 72 below the eye, a bar '6 extending substnntwo subscribing witnesses, thislst day of Autlally parallel with the oblongloop, and abeargust, A. D. 1893.
ing extending between the inner open end WARREN L. BRADDOOK. 5 of said 100p and the outer end of the bar 2', as itnesses:
set forth. ARTHUR W. CROSSLEY,
In testimony whereof I have signed my A. D. HARRISON.
