COAT.
No. 510,452. Patented Dec. '12, 1893.
I I I WITNESSES:
M a. m
UNITED TES PAT NT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN THOMPSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,452, dated December 12, 1893.
Application filed July '7, 1893- Serial No. 479,799. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to coats, especially of the class of loose overcoats called ulsters. Such coats are made full and loose in the waists, and, when desired are brought to the figure by a belt. Such belt has been hitherto an entire belt, passing unattached around the waist, and throwingcthe fullness wherever it might happen to come, or a part belt, extending across the back to the side seams, putting all the fullness in the back, neither of which arrangements is always convenient or desirable.
My method of construction of the coat enables the wearer, at his discretion, to put the fullness at the side of the coat, where it is specially convenient for walking or sitting, or at the back, with capacity for entirely loosening the coat when desired.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which shows a rear elevation of the coat opened out, A represents the middle part of an ulster overcoat constructed according to my plan.
B, B, are straps secured thereto at a point upon each side of the waist portion under the arms thereof, each provided with fastening devices, as buttonholes adapted to be connected to buttons 0, on the respective front sections of the coat, and of less length than the space between their points of attachment to the coat and said fastening devices, and one of said straps having a button D and the other strap having a third button-hole E adapted for use as fastening devices when the straps are connected together at the back and respectively in such position that the space on the back of the coat between the points where the straps are secured is less than the length of the two straps when they are connected together by the said fastening devices. The straps are ordinarily sewed on at the side seams of the coat; the buttons at the side are put at such distances from the points of attachment of the straps that when the straps are buttoned to them each takes up half the fullness of the coat which it is desired to gather in; and the length of the straps and the position of their other fastening devices are made such that when joined together at the back the combined strap takes up there all such superfluous fullness.
I claim as my invention The ulster overcoat herein described having secured thereto at a point upon each side of the waist portion under the arms thereof a strap provided with fastening devices and one of them with a plurality of such devicessaid coat being also provided at points on the waist line forward of the points where the straps are attached with fastening devices-' the spaces between these latter fastening devices and the points where the straps are attached to the coat being greater than the lengths of the straps-and the space at the back of the coat between the points where the Straps are attached to the coat being greater than the combined length of the straps when they are connected together by their fastening devices therefor; whereby the fullness in the waist of the coat may be adjusted discretionally by the straps beneath the arms or at the back: as set forth.
