UNITED STATES:
- PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. HORN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN J. HORN, OF SAME PLACE.
I SHOULDER-BRACE.
$PEGIFIOATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 508,713, dated November 14, 1893.
' Application filed February 10,1893. Serial No. 461,715- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HORN, a citizenof the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Shoulder-Braces, of which the followingis a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct a shoulder brace as to insure the proper hold of the same upon the shoulders at such points as will furnish effective bracing or support without causing any discomfort and without subjecting the brace to any undue strain. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of a pair of shoulder braces constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2, isaview showing the same applied to the wearer.
The braces, so far as regards general construction, may be similar to those in ordinary:
use, the braces which I have illustrated'in the drawings having back bars A A connected, by webs B B, preferably elastic, and having depending straps D D, also preferably elastic;
and provided with adjustable button-hole pieces D. tend two shoulder straps F F, and an arm pit strap G, and from the latter depends an elastic strap H provided with an adjustable clip or holder I for the usual looped or duplex buttonhole piece J for application to the front buttons of the trousers, the buttonhole pieces D receiving the rear buttons.
The arm pit straps G are rendered adj ustable by means of buckles K, but instead of connecting the upper end of said arm pit strap directly to the upper ends of the shoulder straps F F as usual, I provide a cap piece M, to which boththe arm pit strap and the shoulder straps are connected, this cap pro-. viding a broad bearing upon the shoulder at the tip of the same Without interfering with the free movement of the arm, the cap being pre ferably tapered or narrowed from the rear to the front so as to limit the restraining influence of the front portion of the same upon the arm. The lower shoulder strap F'is also secured to theback bar A; by means of a buckle N, or other suitable means, so that From each of the back bars A ex-' regulate the angle of the latter as to bring the'saine out to the extreme tip of the shoulder where the bracing efiect is most needed and where the exercise of a slight power will brace the shoulders to the same degree as the exercise of much greater power at a point farther inward upon the shoulder. The same result could, in a measure, be secured by making the upper strap F adjustable, instead of the lower strap Ft, or both straps may be adj ustable if desired, the object to be attained being to change the length of one strap relatively to the other, so as to vary the angle of the cap piece M as required.
Other constructions than the straps A, B, may also be adopted in the back portion of the braces, without departing from my invention..
Having thus described my invention, I
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, in shoulder braces, of the back portion, the shoulder caps providing an extended and continuous bearing upon the tips of the shoulders, the arm pit straps connecting the front portions of said shouldercaps with the back portion of the brace, the double shoulder straps connecting the rear portions of said shoulder caps with the back portion of the brace, and means for adjusting the length of one of said shoulder straps in each pair, relatively to the other strap of the pair, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, in shoulder braces, of the rear portion, the arm pit straps, the double shoulder straps, and means for adjusting 1n length the lower of said straps whereby the bracing efiect may be shifted to the extreme tip of the shoulder, without changing the length of the upper strap, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM H. HORN.
