Be it known that we, HILAIRE RODIER, of

- WVaterbury, and JACQUES RODIER, of Meriden, Connecticut, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Watch-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to that class of Watch protectors consisting essentially of awire bent to engage with the watch and with the pocket of the wearer and to preventits accidentalor felonious removal. It is intended to produce a simple,l cheap and eihcient device for this purpose.

In the accompanying drawings Figures l, 2 and 3 represent in perspective various forms of our device.

In the example of ourinvention illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings the entire device encept the bandsE is formed from an integral piece of wire. The frame A,'here shown as of substantially annular form,is of somewhat larger diameter than the body of the Watch it is intended to inclose. The clip B is formed at the upper side ofthe frame A, is bent backward in a plane substantially at a right angle with the plane of said frame and is adapted to engage with the stem of the watch as shown. The lug C is formed at the rear of the clip B and is intended as ahandle against which the finger or thumb of the operator bears when the stem of the watch is being inserted into or removed from the clip B. The wingsV D, D, provided at their extremities with reverted barbs d, d, extend to the sides of the wearers pocket and engage therewith' preventing the forcible withdrawal of the entire device and the inelosed watch. As shown three bands E, preferably formed of flattened wire or narrowv strips of metal, are used to hold the device in shape. They may be secured in place by soldering or otherwise.

The operation of our device will be readily understood from an inspection of the drawings. The device is first placed in the pocket of the wearer by slightly springing inward the resilient wings D, D, the reverted barbs d, d engaging with the cloth at the edges of the pocket. The watch is then introduced and its stem slipped into the clip B. The lug C forms a convenient handle against which the finger presses in making this engagement. It will be found in practice that to engage and disengage the Watch is the work of amoment only. At the saine time the watch cannot be removed from the pocket by lifting or 'pulling at the chain or in any other Way Without attracting the attention of the wearer.

In Fig. 2 of our device a pouch F is-fornied at the lower side of the frame A. This pouch forms a seating for the watch and prevents its swinging by the stem from the clip B. The pouch F maybe lined with a textile or other soft material if desired.

In Fig' 3 the pouch F is formed as an elliptical horizontal loop adapted to inclose the watch below its middle point. To adapt it to watches of various sizes it is provided at its rear side with a telescoping stein in lwhich is a locking device G, here shown as a set screw by which the length of the stem kand consequently the height of the pouch F may be regulated.`

It will be seen that our device has other advantages besides that of protecting the watch against pickpockets. As the watch does not rest in the lower edge of the pocket it would not receive the blow if the garment in which the watch was carried should be dropped, as on a. floor. The blow would probably come upon the lower edge of the annular portion A and as this is quite resilient it is unlikely that any injury would be done to the watch.

` We are aware that patents have heretofore been issued for watch protectors in which`a purse or pouch of leather was provided with wings adapted to engage with the pocket of the wearer. We are however unaware of any previous device in which the watch is suspended by its stem in the pocket.

What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows l. In a watch protector in combination, a watch inclosing frame, wings extending from the sides of said frame and a C shaped clip at the upper side of said frame and in a plane IOO substantiallylata right anglethevewith .tand adapted to detachable engagement with the stem of an inclosed watch, substantially as described. y
