SIDNEY POSEN, OF OFFENBACH-ON-THE-MAIN, GERMANY.
LEAF FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,936, dated June 20, 1893.
Application filed January 9, 1893. Serial No. 457,716. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIDNEY PosEN, manufacturer, of Offenbach-on-the-Main, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leaves for Photographic Albums, Screens, and other Like Articles Containing Photographs, of which the following is a specification.
The leaves used heretofore in photographic albums and the like have been providedat the bottom, top or the side .with a slit to permit of inserting or sliding the picture into the opening provided for the same. As is well known it is difficult to insert a picture without tearing the edges of the album leaf and it frequently becomes necessary, in orderto adjust the picture in place, to press with the fingers on-the face of the picture, which is thus liable to become soiled; likewise the removing of the photograph causes considerable difficulty and the edges of the slits of the leaves are frequently torn.
The object of my invention is to produce a leaf for photographic albums which is so constructed that the. pictures can readily be inserted without requiring any trimming or cutting of the picture, nor without in any way injuring the album leaf.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a front-view of my improved leaf for photographic albums and like articles. Fig. 2, is a vertical transverse sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing the leaf closed for holding the pictures. Fig. 3, is a similar view showing the swinging part raised and two pictures inserted, and Fig. 4, is a detail front-view of the bottom part of the swinging leaf.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings A represents an album leaf which is made of paste-board in the usual manner and is provided with an opening or recess B in one face, of the size of the pictures to be inserted. On the same face of the leaf a beveled rabbet C is formed ashort distance from and parallel with the edges of the recess or opening B which rabbet O is preferably gilded or ornamented in colors. To the top of the rabbet O, aleaf D is hinged by a piece of fabric or leather in such a manner, that it can be swung up from the face of the album leaf A, as shown in Fig. 3, or folded down upon the same, and fits snugly in the recess or opening defined by the rabbet O. A latch-plate F is pivoted within the leaf A below the bottoin rabbet C and in said rabbet a notch G is formed through which part of said latch projects, said latch preferably consisting of a circular plate, having one edge out OK on a chord, so that the plate can be turned, so that the chord edge is in line with the bottom of the rabbet. The swinging leaf D is provided in its bottom with a notch H along the edges of which a metal clip H is applied. This notch is provided for the purpose of permitting inserting a finger or an implement to raise the leaf D and also serves as a bearing for the pivoted latch-plate F, this latch-plate being preferably provided with a projection J to permit of turning it on its pivot. The swinging-leaf D is provided with an opening I which may be square, oval or with a rounded top as may be desired. On the other face of the album leaf A a sheet K is applied which has an opening L corresponding to the opening I and ornamented in the same manner, so that both faces of the leaf A will have sub-. stantially the same appearance. To insert the pictures the latch-plate F is turned, so
that its chord edge is in line with the bottom rabbet O and the swinging leaf D is swung from the leaf A and the two pictures M and N are inserted back to back, so that one will appear in the opening L of the sheet K and the other will face toward the back of the swinging leaf D. Said leaf is then swung in the opening or recess formed by the rabbet and is locked in place by turning the latch-plate F in such a manner, that part of said latchplate projects over the metal clip H on the bottom edge of said swinging leaf, thereby holding the two pictures and the swingingleaf in place. To remove the picture it is only necessary to turn the latch to release the swinging leaf, when the same can be raised and the two pictures removed. 1
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- 1. A leaf for photographic albums, provided in one face with a hinged part smaller in size than said leaf, and means for locking vided in one face with a recess of a smaller size than the leaf, an opening inthe opposite face of the leaf, which opening is smaller than the recess, a hinged leaf provided with an opening the same size as the opening in'the leaf, said hinged leaf fitting within a rabbet formed along the edges of the recess and a latch in the bottom edge of the rabbet for l locking the hinged leaf in place in the recess, substantially as set forth.
4. An album leaf having a recess in one face, which recess is smaller than the leaf, an opening in the opposite face of the leaf, which opening is smaller than the recess, a hinged leaf provided with anopening of the same size as the opening of the leaf and fitting within a rabbet along the edges of the recess, a metal.
clip on the bottom of the hinged leaf and a latch in the bottom edge of the rabbet for looking said hinged leaf in place within the recess, substantially'as set forth.
In testimony thatl claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed my name in presen cc of two subscribing witnesses.
