Description
Aug. 22, 1950 w. MCCULLOH GREETING DEVICE AND HOLDER FOR PHONOGRAPH RECORDS Filed March 51, 1944 lmecrmy cri lssmns Patented Aug. 22 1950 GBEETIN G DEVICE AND'HOLDER FOR PHONOGRAPH RECORDS Warring L. McCulloh, Dallas, Tex.
Application March 31, 1944, Serial No. 529,020
This invention relates to devices for conveying greetings such as at Christmas time, New Year, Easter and for Birthday or other occasions, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device which will conveniently hold and carry a transcribed song, piece of music or the like, the record to be played on .a suitable machine,
such as is usually available at soldiers camps,
for sailors, marines and men in the Armed Services generally.
In addition to the facilities of the device to carry a record of music to be transcribed, the device has decorative designs suitable for the occasion and a short portion of the record, also suitably ornamented.
The invention will be readily understood from a perusal of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and in the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a device for carry ing a transcribed record of a song or piece of music as a greeting:
Figure 2 is a View similar to that of Figure l, but with the cover broken away to show the means for holding the recorded music; and
Figure 3 is a detail end view from line 3-3, Figure 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the device consists of a cover in the form of a panel I of cardboard or the like, with a hinge or fiexible strip 2 adapting it to be swung open or closed. A colored decorative design indicated generally at 3, of any preferred color or form is printed or otherwise placed on the movable portion of the panel I.
An intermediate panel 4 and a back panel 5 are spaced apart by strips 6 at each end and bottom of the intermediate and back panels 4 and 5, thereby providing a pocket or space P for a record I. On the panel 4 is similarly printed a decoration 3 with a fragment of the recorded music and verse, as shown. The panels are held together by ribbons 9 or other suitable decorative means, preferably with a bow It).
It will be observed that the spacing and binding strips are secured to the intermediate and back panels and hold the same in fixed relationship so that the inserted record or article I will be clamped and held therebetween. It will also be observed that the front and back panels are coextensive in area or superficial dimensions with each other so that their similar marginal edges register with each other in the closed condition of the container, while on the contrary the intermediate panel is of less depth than said front and rear panels and has its upper marginal edge '2 Glaims. Cl. 12920) 8 terminating below the upper marginal edge '9 of the back panel and also below the upper marginal edge 4!! of the front panel, when the latter is closed. 'By this means the pocket is provided with an open top lying below the level of the upper edge of the rear panel through which an edge portion of the article 1 may project "so as to be exposed when the front panel is opened. This allows the upper marginal edge portion of the back panel to be "pressed back by the forefinger and the projecting part of the article to be readily gripped between the forefinger and thumb of the hand of the operator to facilitate and render easy the withdrawal of the article from the pocket. To make this operation still easier the intermediate panel may be provided with a recess or cut-out portion II, as shown. Furthermore, the described dimensions and construction of the panels insure protection of the part of the article projecting from the pocket when the container is closed, as in such condition of the container the upper marginal edges of the front and back panel will extend above the top of the pocket and cover and protect the projecting part of the article.
The device is of a size or such dimensions as will be suitable for mailing and presents a novel and unique means for conveying a greeting, according to the season of the year or the occas1on.
Obviously, the invention is susceptible of some modifications and alterations, such as would be within the inventive thought and within the scope and meaning of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A combined greeting card and mailing device for individual musical records comprising a stiff oblong rectangular container consisting of three separate stiff panels including a back panel, a decorative front panel comprising greeting card, and a decorative intermediate panel including on its face fragments of a musical score, the front panel being hinged adjacent one of its margins for opening and closing movements, and rigid, fiat spacing strips disposed between and along three of the marginal edges of the intermediate and back panels and secured to said intermediate and back panels to hold the same in fixed relation, said strips being of a size to form a pocket between said panels open at and between the fourth marginal edges thereof for the slidable insertion and removal of a single transcription record only, to be enclosed for mailing in the container, and means for detachably securing the three panels together at their rear marginal edges.
2. A relatively rigid decorative mailing device for individual records comprising an oblong rectangular container consisting of separate stifi front and back panels coextensive in area with each other, and a decorative intermediate panel, said front panel being in the form of a greeting card and being hinged at one of its marginal edges for opening and closing movements, and rigid fiat spacing strips disposed in parallel relation to and between and along the bottom and end marginal portions of the intermediate and back panels and secured to said back and intermediate panels to hold the same in fixed relation to each other and being of a thickness sufficient to form a pocket between said panels open at and between the upper marginal edges thereof for the slidable insertion and removal of a single transcription record only, enclosed for mailing in the pocket and clamped therein by said intermediate and back panels, the upper marginal edge of the intermediate panel at the open top of the pocket being arranged to terminate below the level of the upper marginal edges of the front and back panels to allow an edge portion of the article to project through the open top of the pocket so as to be exposed when the front panel is opened and readily grasped for removal of the article and so that in the closed condition of the container the upper marginal edges of the front and back panels will project above the open 4 top of the pocket and cover and protect the portion of the article projecting therethrough, and decorative means for detachably securing the three panels together at their rear marginal edges.
