Application 2 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mailers and has for its primary object to provide, ina single article, an advertising medium and an order blank.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a mailer of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly attractive in appearance, which may be sent through the mails without enclosing in an envelope, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accom- Figurefl is aV view in front elevation of an article constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a rear elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a view in vertical longitudinal section through the invention.
Figure 4 is an elevational view looking at the front or inner side of the rear card or sheet.
Figure 5 is an elevational view, looking at the inner or rear side of the front card or sheet.
Figure 6 is a topi plan view of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a front sheet which is designated generally by the reference numeral I and a back sheet which is designated generally by the reference numeral 2. As illustrated to advantage in Figure 1 of the drawings, the outer or forward side of the front sheet `I has printed thereon suitable advertising matter 3 in addition to a representation of the article being advertised, as at. 4. Below the representation 4, samples of cloth 5 are secured on the front sheet I. As best seen in Figure 5 of the drawings, the inner or rear side of the front sheet I is provided with a substantially blank area 6 for receiving a copy of the order, below which additional descriptive or adV vertising matter may appear, as at 1.
The rear sheet 2 is divided transversely by a row of perforations 8 in a manner to provide a detachable self-addressed order blank 9 opposite the area 6 of the front sheet I. As clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 4 of the drawings, the rear or outer side of the order blank 9 is ruled and printed, as at I0, for the notation of orders thereon, and the front or inner side of August 1, RenewedMay 26, 1936 1934, Serial No. 737,985
said order blank has printedthereon the return address II, etc. The lower portion of the rear sheet' 2, which is designated `by the reference numeral I2, bears, on its rear or outer side, a return address, as at I3 (see Figure 2), directions for openingthe invention, as at` I4, and receives the address of the person or firm being solicited, as at, I5. The inner or front side of the lower portion I2 of the rear sheet 2 may, if desired, be left blank, as seen in Figure 4 of the drawings.
The sheets I'and 2 are `preferably substantially rectangular, as shown. These sheets I and 2 are detachably secured together through the medium of a cover sheet I6 of suitable flexible, transparent material, preferably Cellophane, which extends across the front of the sheet I and has its longitudinal marginal portions folded around the rear of the sheet 2 and adhesively secured thereto, as at I'I. It will thus be seen that the advertising matter, 3, the representation 4, the samples 5, etc. on the Vfront of the sheet I will be displayed at all times in a highly attractive manner and at the same time be protected against damage. It will also be seen that the folds I1, which traverse the row of perforations 8, strengthen the joint between the order blank 9 and the rest of the sheet 2 for preventing accidental detachment of said blank 9.
To open the article, it is only necessary to insert a suitable implement, such as a knife or an envelope opener, between the sheet I and the transparent sheet I6 and to run said im- Vplement along one of the longitudinal edges of said sheet I in a manner to sever one of the adhesively secured aps or marginal portions I'I. A sheet of carbon paper (not shown) may then be placed between the order blank 9 and the sheet I for making `a carbon copy of the order on the area 6 of sheet I when the order is written on the outer or rear side of said order blank 9. The order blank 9 is then detached and returned to the sender.
It is believed that the many advantages of an article in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the character described, a
pair of superimposed oblong sheets one of which has an exposed surface provided with an area delineated thereon in which is located a representation of a predetermined article for sale, and a second area below the rst area and in which samples are secured to said one sheet; the other sheet of said pair being divided by a transverse row of perforations into a pair of separable sections including a return order blank section and a mailing section, a transparent cover sheet superimposed over the exposed surface of said one sheet and having longitudinal edge portions folded over the corresponding edges of the sheets of said pair and adhesively united with the second sheet of said pair; the sheets of said pair being mutually separated at their respective opposite ends for the insertion of a carbon between the order blank section and the opposed portion of the first-mentioned one of said pair of sheets.
2. A combination advertising and mail order blank comprising a pair of rectangular sheets arranged one upon the other and a transparent cover sheet superimposed on one of the firstnamed sheets and having longitudinal edge portions folded over the corresponding edges of the first-named sheets and adhesively united to the exposed surface of the other of the rstnamed sheets; said one of the first-named sheets constituting an advertising sheet and provided on its exposed surface with advertising consisting of legendary data, a pictorial representation of the article advertised, and samples of the material from which the article represented is to be made secured to the advertising sheet, and the other of said sheets constituting a combination mailing and return order blank sheet divided by a transverse row of perforations whereby the mailing and return order blank portions may be mutually separated; and said advertising sheet being also adapted to serve as a second sheet for the mail order blank upon insertion of a carbon sheet between said first-mentioned two sheets,
