SLIDING DOOR.
Patented June 20, 1893.

" lllllu r NORRIS PETERS co.. mo'roumm WASHINGTON n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TENNIS J. VANDER BENT, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
SLIDING DOOR.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,766, dated June 20, 1893.
I Application filed June 8, 1892. Serial No. 436,022. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, 'IENNIs J. VANDER BENT, a citizen of the Netherlands, and a resident of Jersey City, Hudson county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sliding doors and has for its object to insure the simultaneous opening or closing of both doors of a pair and the movement of one door by the power ap- The two doors I I slide back and forth to and from each other on any suitable guide or upon any suitable guiding rail not necessary here to be shown. To each door is pivoted an arm and both the said arms are pivoted to each other. Thus, as shown, there are two arms A B, the arm A being pivoted to a bracket a, secured the the door I, and the arm B, being pivoted to a bracket 1), secured to the door I, and one of the arms is forked to receive the head of the other and boththe meeting ends of the arms are adapted to receive a screw-bolt or pin 3 passing through the arms into a sliding block E, or otherwise suitably guided and adapted to move vertically up and down.
One form of guide D is shown in the form of a slotted plate 1, having a backing piece 2, and adapted vto be inserted in an opening in the side wall or otherwise connected to any suitable support, the block E sliding between the plates 1 and 2, and the pin 3 projecting through a slot y in the plate 1.
Any movement to open or close one of the doors will exert a thrust or draft upon one of the arms thatwill cause the meeting ends of the two arms to be either thrust upward or downward exerting a similar action upon the other arm so that the opposite door will be moved to or from that which is being operated. By this means the movements of the two doors are simultaneous and any power applied to open or close one door will be transferred to the other with likeeffect.
Without limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts shown and 7 described, I claim 1. The combination with a pair of sliding doors of two arms connected each to one of the doors, and together connected to a movable guide, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the doors I, I, arms A, B, each connected to one of the doors, block E and guide D, substantially as set forth.-
3. The combination of the sliding doors, arms A, B, block E and slotted guide plate 1 adapted to be secured to a suitable support,
substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
TENNIS J. VANDER BENT.
