PATENT OFFICE.
- EDWARD MGCLURE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANKLIN P. SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ELEVATOR-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,395, dated January 12, 1904.
Application filed December 19, 1902. Serial No. 135,864. (No model.)
i I To all, whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, EDWARD MoCLURn, a citizen of the United States ofAmerica, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevator-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in elevator-doors; and its objectis to produce a device of the class wherein one of two sliding doors moves behind the other, both doors being moved by any force acting on one of them.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, which are clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in this specification.
In the aforesaid drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved doors looking from the inside of the elevator-well. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the doors open. l
Referring to the drawings, A and B are two sliding doors running on hangers a and 6, respectively. Both doors slide to the right, looking at them as in Fig. 1, and the door A in that position slides behind the door B. The door A is provided with a rail A toward the lower part of its left-hand edge, the rail form ing with the contiguous edge of the door A a vertical guideway.
C indicates the wall of the inclosure, having the doorway which the doors are adapted to close. A lever D is pivoted between its ends by a pivot I) on the door B, which will hereinafter be called the slow door. The left-hand end of the lever D is curved downward and is provided at its lower end with a roller d, running in the guideway formed between the rail A and the contiguous edge of the door A or fast door. To a bar C of the wall C is pivoted a link E by means of a pivot c, and the opposite end of this link E is pivoted to the right-hand end of the lever D by a pivot e.
ver D is pushed downward and the doors are pushed to the right, the roller d travels down the guideway, thereby raising the pivot c. This angular motion of the lever tends to draw the pivot of the lever D on the slow door into the same vertical line with the roller d and guideway on the fast door, and it also tends to draw together the pivot e and the pivot D, thereby drawing the slow door toward the wall. The result of this is that after the door is started the two doors move together and reach a wide-open position at the same time, the door A moving at double the speed of the door B. The particular advantage of this device lies in the fact that the levers lie when the door is closed in the line of motion, and therefore lock the door shut without any looking means.
I realize that considerable variations can be made in the details of this construction, and I-do not, therefore, desire to limit myself to the specific form herein set forth.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a wall having a doorway therein, of two doors slidable one behind the other and both behind the wall, of a lever pivoted on the slow door, a substantially vertical guideway upon one of the extreme parts engaging with the lever, and a link connecting the lever with a stationary pivot upon the other extreme part, substantially as de- I scribed.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a suitable wall having a doorway and a plurality of doors adapted to close the doorway and slidable one behind the other to open the same, of a lever fulcrumed between its ends, upon the slow door, and having one end in running engagement with the fast door, and a link connecting the opposite end of the lever with the Wall.
In witness whereof I have signed the above application for Letters Patent, at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, this 13th day of December, A. D. 1902.
EDWARD MoCLURE.
