' JOHN F. FALLON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CARRIAGE-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 372,847, dated November 8, 1887.
Application filed February 18, 1887. Serial No. 228,035. (No mpdel.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. FALLON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have in vented a certain new and useful lmprovementin Brougham and other Carriage Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement on the ordinary system of hanging the doors of It consists in slidingthe doors backward along and parallel with the outsides of the carriage in lieu of bringing them to the latter, as at present.
On the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a side elevation representing a portion of a brough am with door arranged according to my invention; Figs. 2 and 3, plans, respectively, ofthe upper and lower guide-bars, between which the door is carried, as shown in Fig. 1; and Figs. 4, 5, and 6, full size sections on lines 1 1, 2 2, and 33, respectively, on Fig. 1, looking toward thedoor.
Like letters of reference denote like partsin all the figures.
A represents the sideof a brougham partly broken away, and B the door, which is mounted between and carried by the upper. and lower guide-bars, O C. To the front edge of the door B, at its upper front corner, is fixed an iron plate, d, (see Fig. 4,) from the upper end of which projects upward above the door B a guide-piece, e, which takes into a curved groove, f, formed in the under side of the upper guide-bar, O, and extending back ward along the latter to near the rear door-pillar, g.
To the inner frame-work of the door B, at the upper rear corner of the latter, is attached a plate, h, from the upper end of which projects upward above the door B a hook or hanger, i, (see Fig. 5,) which, when the door B is in its closed position, as shown in Fig. 1 and by shaded dotted lines in Fig. 2, is away from and out of engagement with a curved guide groove or recess, j, which is formed in the under side of the rear portion of the upper guide-bar, G, and partially closed transversely at its mouth by an underlapping flat iron bar, k, which is secured to the upper guide-bar, O, and constitutes an internal ledge to the groove or recess j, as hereinafter more particularly referredto. If desired, I may use rollers at the upper end of the plate It in lieu of the hook i.
I Along the bottom edge of the door B, at its front corner, is attached a plate, Z, from the outer edge of which projects downward a guide-piece, m, which setsin'acurved groove, 71, formed in the upper side of the lowerguidebar, 0, and extending the entire length of the latterto near the door-pillar g.
Thedoor B being in the closed position, as seen in Figs. 1,2, and 3, with its top and bot tom front corner guidepieces, e and m, in their respective grooves f and n, and it being de sired to open the door B, its rear portion is pushed or pulled outward until the hook or hanger i at the top is in line with thenear end of the groove or recess j of the upper guidebar, 0, and catch onto the ledge 70 therein, as in Fig. 5, when the door B is thrown back over and parallel with the rear portion of the side A. of the carriage into the open position, asindicated by dotted lines to the left of the door B, its front upper and lower guide-pieces, e and m, meanwhile sliding and remaining in their respective groovesf and a, and the rear hook or hanger, z, sliding along the top ledge, k, by which the door B is supported atits rear portion when being opened. 'On being slid forward for closing, the door B, on arriving opposite to the doorway, is pushed or pulled inward at its rear portion into the closed position, as before, and the hook or hanger 7; will be again clear of its groove 3', sufficient play being allowed to the guide-pieces e and m in their respective grooves f and a to allow at such times for the slight vibratory movement thereon of the door B.
ing the wheels or striking tree-boxes, hitehgroove n, substantially as shown, and for the posts, stepping-stones, or other obstructions, purpose described.
as is the ease when the doors are swung open In testimony whereofIaffiX my signature, in on their hinges. presence of two witnesses, this 23d day ofDe- 5 I claim as my invention-- 1 eember, 1886.
In a brongham or other carriage, the door B, I T having guide-pieces e m and hook or hanger 1', JOHN IALLOA' in combination with upper guide-supporting 'Witnesses: bar, 0, having grooves f j and ledge 70, and S. L. SCHRADER,
