GRAIN-DOOR FOR RAILWAYS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. T3, i915.
Application-filed. July 29, 1914. Serial No. 853,913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, ANDREW R. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarkfield, in the county of Yellow Medicine and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grain-Doors for Railways, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in grain doors for railway freight cars and means for hanging the same, the object of the invention being to provide an improved grain door and improved means for hanging the same, so that the grain door can be readily moved to open or closed position and so that when not desired the grain door can be arranged to one side of the door opening out of the way.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
Tn the accompanying drawings :-T igure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a freight car provided with an ordinary sliding door and with a grain door constructed in accordance with my invention, the sliding door being shown in open position and the grain door being shown as arranged in closed position in the door opening. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line (ii-01: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the grain door in partly open position. Figs. t and 5 are detail views.
For the purposes of this specification a wall of a car is here indicated at 1, provided with a door opening 2 and with a sliding door 3, which may be of ordinary construction and which is hung from a rail 4t and the lower side of which is carried on guard and supporting rails 5. The rail 4 is interrupted above the door opening and in accordance with my invention 1 provide a shifting rail 6 which is arranged in the upper portion of the door opening, in a common plane with the rail a and is provided with vertical depending arms 7 which are pivotally mounted in opposite sides of the door opening on pivots 8. Thereby the said shifting rail is adapted to be turned outwardly to arrange it in line with the rail at or to be turned inwardly to a point somewhat within the vertical plane of the car wall. The width of the car door 3 ex ceeds that of the door opening so that the car door when in closed position, covering the opening, will be engaged by the rail members 4 and 5 on opposite sides of the door opening as indicated in dotted lines in llig. 3. I also, in accordance with my invention provide a grain door 9 the width of which is slightly less than that of the door opening, the grain door being also of less vertical extent than the door opening. The grain door is provided with vertically arranged hanger rods 10 the upper portions of which extend above the grain door and ar bent reversely as at 11 and provided with supporting wheels or rollers 12 which are mounted on suitable aXles 13 and within said bends, these wheels being adapted to engage the shifting rail 6 to suspend the grain door therefrom when the grain door is in the opening 2 and being also adapted to pass from the said rail 6 to the rail sections t on either sides of the door opening.
When the grain door is arranged in the opening 2 and swung slightly inwardly, together with the shifting track 6 a bolt 14:, with which the grain door is provided, is engaged with a suitable opening or keeper 15 in the floor of the grain door car to secure the lower edge of the door. The door is also provided, on its outer side, with a lock ing bar 16, which is pivotally mounted at its center on the center of the door as at 7, and the ends of which may be engaged. with the sides of the door opening.
My improved grain door may be made of any suitable material and may be readily shifted into closed position in the door opening or to one side thereof out of the way and moreover does not interfere with the operation of the ordinary sliding door.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In combination with a car wall having a door opening, a track rail in the upper pormeans to secure the grain door in closed position in the opening.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature intpresence of tWo witnesses.
ANDREW R. PETERSON. Witnesses:
' EDITH YOUNGMARK.
