UNITED STATES PATENT oEEroE.
HUBERT WITTE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO ST. LOUIS OAR i COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION.
CAR-PLATFORM GATE.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9, 1906.
T0 all wtont it waa/y concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT WITTE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the .State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Platform Gates, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication.
My invention relates to a gate for the platforms of railway-cars, especially those used upon street-railways; andthe invention has for its object to provide a gate of the character named with simpl'e means whereby the gate may be held trom movement when in either its closed or open position.
Figure I is a top or plan view of my gate shown in closed position. Fig. II is a horizontal section taken on line II II, Fig. III. Fig. III is an elevation of the gate in open position. Fig. IV is a vertical cross-section taken on line IV IV, Fig. I.
A designates a portion of the end wall of a car to which my gate is attached.
1 designates hinge-brackets that are secured to the car end wall to serve as supports for the gate. The gate proper consists of a border-band 2, in which are seated rods 3. The border-band has secured to it hinge-lugs 4, which are pivotally connected to thehingebrackets 1 in a manner to provide for i'ree swinging motion of the ate.
5 is an end lrod mem er that is secured to the upper portion ofthe-border-strap 2 by arms provided in connection therewith and is also secured to the rear vertical portion of the border-strap by stems 6. The said end rod member is thereby provided with both a horizontal portion and a vertical portion, which may be conveniently grasped by a passenger in entering or leaving the carplatform when the gate is in open position.
7 designates a slotted guide secured to the car end wall A in a horizontal position, the said guide being made of channel form and having the slot therein of less width than the width of the channel. At the upper side of the guide 7 and adjacent to its end nearest the point of hinged support of the gate is a housing 8. In this housing is a retainingbolt 9, that is provided with a head 10, preferably having a rounded point, and adapted to project across the slot inthe guide 7. (See Figs. III and IV The shank of the retaining bolt is surrounded by an expansionspring 11, located within the housing 8, which serves to hold the head of the bolt projected romthe housing. The shank of said bolt has secured to it at its upper end a handle 12, by which the bolt may be re- -tracted against the action of the spring 11.
13 designates a link that is loosely iitted to one of the gate-rods 3 to turn thereon, the end of the link connected to said rod being supported by a tie-bar 14, that connects several of the rods 3. The end of the link 13 opposite that fitted to a rod of the gate, as mentioned, is arranged to move in the uide 7, and on said end at its upper and ower sides are studs 15, that are adapted to ride in the channel of the guide, where they serve as members to prevent the escape of the link from said Guide. Projecting from the end of the link last mentioned is a tooth 16, that is arranged to ride in the slot of the guide 7 from end to end thereof and is adapted to move into a position adjacent to the head of the retaining-bolt 9 when the gate is in closed position, as seen in Figs. I and IV.
When in the practical use of my gate the gate is moved into closed position, as seen in Fig. I, the link 13 is drawn with vthe gate until its free end riding in the guide 7 is brought into juxtaposition with the retaining-bolt head 10. As the free end of the link approaches the end of the guide at which the locking-bolt is located, the tooth 16 on the link impinges against the retaining-bolt head and acts to reciprocate the retaining-bolt in its housing to permit said tooth to pass the head of the bolt. The head of the bolt then returns to its former position and becomes seated against the forward face of the tooth 16, where it serves by bearing against said tooth to prevent endwise movement of the link 13 in a rearward direction, thereby holding the gate in its closed position. When the gate is to be swun into open position, the lretaining-bolt is wit drawn from engagement with the tooth of the link 13 by grasping its handle 12 to withdraw the head of the bolt into the housing 8. The free end of the link may then ride in the guide 7, while the gate is being moved into the open position shown in Figs. II and III, the movement being continued until said link lies longitudinally within the guide. As the link is finaIlybrought into the position within the guide it strikes against the head of the retainin -bolt, thereby moving said head into the ousing 8 to IOO IOS
permit the link to pass beneath it. Immediately after the link has passed beneath the head of the bolt said head is thrown out- Ward ly or downwardlyT into a position infront of the link to engage it and securely hold it from movement, and the gate is thus held in open position.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination with a swinging gate, of a guide, a link connected to said gate and arranged to operate in said guide, and a retaining-bolt supported by said guide and arranged to engage said link, substantially as set forth.
2. The Combination with a swinging gate, of a link connected to said gate, a guide in which said link operates and a spring retaining-bolt Carried by said guide, substantially as set forth.
3. The Combination With a swinging gate, of a guide, of a link connected to said gate and provided with a tooth, and a retainingbolt arranged to engage said tooth g said link being arranged to operate in said guide, substantially as set forth.
""'"`4. The combination with a swinging gate,
of a Channel-guide, a link pivoted to said gate and provided with studs arranged to operate in the Channel in said guide, and a retaining-bolt arranged to engage said link to hold it from movement in said guide; said link being provided with a tooth to be engaged by said retaining-bolt, substantially as set forth.
HUBERT WITTE. v In presence of- A. DIEKWANN, HELEN J. MURPHY.
