To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE T. BUDDLE, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combination Table- Lock and Opener, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in extension table locks.

An object of the present invention is to provide a lock for an extension table the unlocking of which automatically forces the meeting portions of the table apart.

A further object is to provide a lock for extension tables such that the meeting portions thereof may be forced together with the result that the lock will automatically snap into a locked position.

A further object is to provide a lock such that any stress exerted thereon by the meeting portions of the table will be taken up by the pivot and will not tend to unlock the device.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof, the preferable form of my invention is illus trated, in which :Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of an extension table with my improved lock and opener operatively secured thereto and illustrating the same in a locked position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the foregoingwith my improved lock and opener in an open or unlocked position and illustrating the manner in which the adjoining portions of the table are forced apart so that the fingers may be inserted between the meeting portions of the table to continue or increase the opening therebetween. Fig. 3 is a side view of the improved lock showing a portion of the table in section. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 4- of Fig. 1.

are the top members which are mounted for relative movement for extension'to admit the fillers therebetween as is usual in the construction of tables of the class with which my improved device is to be used, it being noted in this connection that the members 5 are not providedwith the usual allotment of legs and accessories in the form of braces and so forth, as the same. are not essential for the clear disclosure of the present device.

Rigidly secured to one of the extension members 5 and preferably central thereof, is the catch plate 6 which is formed with the base plate 7 and the upstanding flange 8. The catch plate 6 provides engageable means with which the latch coacts to lock the movable members 5 in juxtaposed posiprises a link 10 provided with a transverse notch 11 at the outer free end and which end is also provided with a beveled portion 12 which is adapted to contact with the flange 8 for the displacement of the link 10 to thereby allow the said. flange to come into alinement with the notch 11 which imme diately springs into engagement therewith. The forward end of link 10 is pivotally secured to and guided in its movements by the arm 13 the latter being provided with a slot 14 adjacent the free extremity thereof and through which extends the guide post 15 illustrated in the present drawings as of the nature of the wood screw. In order to provide for the immediateengagement of the notch 11 with the flange 8 when the same come into alinementacompression U-shaped spring 16 is secured to the post 15 and to the arm 13. In order to prevent any lateral play of the forward end of the link the guide member 17 is provided, the same taking the nature of an overhanging flange which is in constant-or continual contact with one surface of the link 10.
