COMBINED TABLE LOCK AND OPENER.
APPLICATION r1150 OCT. 30. 1914.

Attorneys I r m example in Patent No. l, 103,029,issued to moon July 14, 1914. y r
One of the objects of the (invention is to i provide a lock of few parts, which can be appliedreadily to a tablet-or the like, and which, when moved 1n one direction, to opcrate to unlock the partsof tabletop and to shift said parts relative to each other and which, when moved in the opposite d1- rection, will operate successively to engage the movable" part ofa table top and draw said part toward the adjacent fixed part of the top.
A further object is to provide a lock of this character utilizing a latch of novel form having a combined guide and tripping element whereby the latch is actuated at the proper time during the operation of the lock. I a.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear, as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafterdescribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1' is a bottom plan view of a portion ofan extension table having the present improvements combined therewith, the sections of'the table being shown drawn together. Fig. 2 is a similar view but showing the sections of the table unlocked and pushed; apart. Fig. ,3 is a bottom plan view, of a modified form of lock, the parts being shown held together. Fig. 4 is a similar viewshowing theparts unlocked and pushed apart. Fig. 5 is asection on line A-B Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference C and D designateopposed sec-'- COMBINED TABLE LOCK AND ornnnn.
Specification of Letters latent. Application filed October 30,1914.
' 11 being designed to as shown in "Fig. 2. 1 Pivotally mounted on the strip 5 is a latch Patented oat. 12,1915. Serial 170.869.438.
tions of an extension table or the'like and secured to one of thesectionsis a keeper made up of abaseor attaching plate 1 and an outstanding ear 2, the ear extending only partly acrossthe base or attachingplate. Secured to the section D is an attaching plate 3 having an eye 4 outstanding there from and slidably mountedwithin this eye is a latch strip 5, one end of which is piv otally connected, as at 6, toa lever 7' fulcrumed, at 8, upon an attaching plate 9secured to the section'D. This plate' has a lug 10 projecting therefrom and constituting a stop for limiting'the movement of the lever (in one direction. i The latch strip 5 is provided at one end with a' tongue 11 atone side of which is arranged a. shoulder 12 adapted to bear against the ear'2 of the keeper, the tongue extend past the ear 2 13 provided, at its outer end, with a hook 14, while extending laterally from its inner end portion is a nose or projection 15. The latch 13 extends into the eye 4 and the pivot stud 16 on which the latch is mounted is adapted to work within a recess 17 formed. within the eye, as shown particularly in Fig. 5.
The-nose or projection 15 is so positioned that when the latch is projected in one direction, the said nose or projection will strike against the eye 4. Consequently it srarnsrarnnr torsion J eEonenrBUDnLE, OECI-IICAGO, ILLINOIS.
will be apparent that during the movement of the lever 7 in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, the shoulder 12 of the latch strip 5 will be brought against the ear 2 and will push against said ear so as thus to move the sections apart. During the completion of this movement, the nose 15 comes against the eye 4 and causes thelatch 13 to swing about its pivot 16, thus swinging the hook 14 laterally from back of the ear 2 and to the position shown in Fig. 2. Consequently section D can be pushed from section 0. V V
When it is desired to assemble the sections and DQthe section C is pushed toward the section D, thus to bring the ear 2 against the shoulder 12. By then swinging lever 7 in a direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, the side of the latch 13 will work against the eye 4 so that said latch will be shifted laterally to bring the hook 14 back to the ear. Thus the hook will engagesaid ear and, during the continued movement of the latch strip 5, the section 0 wil be drawn tightly againstthe section D'. Instead of providing a keeper havlng a single ear which receives both the thrust" exerted by the shoulder 12 and the pull 6X- eit-ed by the hook 14, a keeper having separate ears 18 and 19 can" be provided, yas
' shown in Figsliand 1. Where a keeper of Copies of this patentmay be obtained for this form isemployed,;the tongue 20 upon the latch strip 21 is made longer than the tonguell-so as to project beyond the hook I F 22 on latch 23. Furthermore the shoulder 12 is dispensed With. Thus it Will be seen the hook to be shifted from back of the car 18. ,During the movement of the latch strip 21' in the opposite direction, the latch 23 Willoperate in the manner hereinbeforedescribed so as to engage ear 18 and pull the two sections together.
What is claimed is 1. The combination With a keeper having aprojectingear, of a guide member, a slidable member Within' the, guide member, means for sh ft ng said'shdable member 111 one direction to push against the keeper, a
keeper engaging latch pivotally connected to the shdable member, and means upon the latch and cooperating with the guide for shifting said latch out of engagement with the keeper during the completlo'n of the pushing movement of the slidable neinbei'.
2. The combination With a keeperfof a guide .member, a slidable member Within the L guide member, means for shifting the slid able member in one direction to push againstthe keeper, a keeper engaging latch pivotally connected'to the slidable member, and a projectingportion upon-the latch and vmovable against the guide during the Push;
ing movement of the slidable member to shiftthe latch out of engagement With the keeper; v p In testimony that I clann the foregoing I have hereto aiiiXed my'signaas my own, turein the presence oftwo WliJIlESSQSt E RGE T. BUDDLE v \Vitnesses: Q
