JOI-IN HOPE, JR., OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,845, dated July 8, 1890.
Application led December 3, 1889. Serial No. 332,367. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN HOPE, J r., of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Latches; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in latches for doors, operated by the knobs on each side of the door and providedr with a device by means of which the latch is locked.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the latch, its connection with the door-knobs, and the device by which the bolt is connected with or disconnected from the latch-frame, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a side view of the latch and part of the door and door-jamb, showing the latchframe and operating-pins in broken lines. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the latch, showing the same secured to a door. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of part of the latch, showing the bolt separated from the latch-frame in the locked position. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the latch on the line A B. Fig. 5 is another sectional view of the latch on the line C D.
Similar numbers ot' reference indicate correspon ding parts throughout.
In the drawings, the number G indicates a metal frame extending across the edge of the door and along the sides, and secured to the door by entering the part extending across the edge into the door, so that the outer surface is flush with the edge of the door, and then passing the bolt 7 through the door and screwing the end into the opposite end of the frame 6, as isshown in Fig. 2.
The metal frame 6 is provided on its inner sides with the recess S, in which the latchframe 9 slides. The bosses 10 l0 are formed one on each of the sides of the metal frame 6, and in the bosses 10 10 are supported the pintles 11 11, having the disks 12 12, from which the pins 13 13 project, each one of the disks being secured to one end of the pintle and the vknob 14 to the other end. The latch-frame 9 is provided with the opening l5, into which the pin 13 enters. As the pin 13 is secured away from the center of the pintle 1l, by turning either oneof the knobs 14 the latch-frame 9 is made to slide in the recess 8, so as to reciprocate therein. The end of the latch-frame 9 extending across the thickness of the door is provided with the cylindrical projection 1G, around which the coiled spring 17 is placed. The said spring 17, entering a hole bored into the door, bears on the latch-frame and the door and holds the latch in the closed position when the knobs are released. The latch-frame 9 is provided at its forward end with the locking-heads 1S, and similar locking-heads or buttons 19 are secured to and project from the inner face of the part of the frame 6 extending across the door.
The plate 20, to which the bolt 21 is secured, has the locking-lever 22 pivotally secured to its inner side. One end of the locking-lever 22 extends through the L-shaped opening 23. When the projecting end of the lever is raised, the lever 22 connects the plate 20 and bolt 21 with-"the locking-heads or buttons 19, and thus secures the bolt to the metal frame 6 and separates the same from the latch-frame 9. By turning one or both of the knobs 14 the latch-frame is reciprocated, but the locking-bolt is firmly held in the locked position, so that the door cannot be opened. When now the lever 22 is depressed, it will be disengaged froin the locking-heads 19 and pass under the locking-heads 18, secured to the latch-frame 9, and connect the bolt 21 with the latch-frame, so that when either one of the knobs 14 is turned the latch-frame 9, the plate 20, bolt 2l, and lever 22 will reciprocate together, the lever 22 sliding in the horizontal part of the L-shaped opening 23. By this construction a simple and durable springlatch is secured which can be operated by either of the knobs, to be used as a simple latch, and can be locked on one side of the door by raising the end of the lever 22 into the vertical arm of the L-shaped opening in the frame 6.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A door-latch consisting of a metal traine IOO 3. The co1nbination,in a locking-latch, with r 5 the frame 6, bosses 10 l0, pintles 11, disks 12, pins 13, the L-shaped opening 23, the recess 8, and bolt 7,oE the latch-frame 9,provided With the looking-heads 18, the plate 20, provided With the bolt 2l and the lever 22, and the lock- 2o ing-l1eads 19, extending` from the inner face of the frame 9, constructed to be reciproeated by the knobs 14 or secured in the locked position, as described.
