APPLICATION FILED 0120.29. 1913 1,171,975. Patented Feb. 15,1916.
L ml-111m: 4 21mm UNITED s'rnTns PATENT OFFICE.
FLOYD N. PERKINS, 0F FREEPORT, 'ILLINOIS,'ASSIGNOR TO ARCADE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF FREEPORT, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
LATCH.
Application filed December 29, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLOYD-N. PERKINS, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches, of which the following is' a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in latches of the class in which an arm swinging substantially in the plane of the door is pivoted upon a suitable base plate fastened upon either the door or the casing and arranged to swing over and upon a plate having an inclined surface secured to the other of said parts.
The purpose of the invention is to provide simple means through which the closing of the door may operate to throw the swinging arm from the open to the locked position.
To such end it consists in certain novel characteristics which will appear in connection with the descripton of the preferred form of the invention herein shown and described and the essentialfeatures of which will be clearly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front eleration of a complete latch embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view looking at the plane 22 in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 3 is a view of a portion of Fig. 1, showing the locking arm in the upright or unlocked position. Fig. 4 is a section in the plane 1-4, looking in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. 5 is an under plan of a plate adapted for attachment to the casing.
Referring to these drawings, A represents a part of a door and B, a part of the casing against which it swings. Attached to the door is an incline, a, continued downward in the form of a handle, a and laterally into a finger, a A plate, I), secured to the casing, has pivoted upon it a locking arm.
6 turning u on a ivot Fi 2 andv swinging from a position upon the incline which is shown in Fig. 1, upward and toward the left into the position shown in Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 809,152.
Fig. 3. The plate I) has a stop, 6 Fig. 5, andthe lower end of the pivot b has fast upon it a washer, b, with a lug, 6 Fig. 5, arranged to engage the stop and check the movement of the locking arm when I it reaches the position shown in Fig. 3. This position is slightly beyond the vertical line of the pivot so that the weight of the arm holds it against the stop. A lug, 6 projects radially from the arm 6 and bears a cam face, I)". hen the arm is in the upper position shown in Fig. 3, the lug 6 lies in the path of the finger 44 hen the door is closing the finger strikes the cam face 6 Patented Feb. 15, 1916.
and swings the arm 6 toward the right,
throwing it down upon the incline a.
I'do not limit myself to the exact form herein shown except as pointed out in the following claims, in which it is my intention invention over the prior art.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A fastener of the character described, comprising a door pull handle having an incline adapted to form a rest and with a laterally projecting tongue, and a pivoted lever provided with an inclined cam portion adapted in the closing of the door to engage the tongue and to cause said lever to swing to cover all of the patentable novelty in my across thewmeeting line of the door and its 1 casing and to rest upon the incline of the door pull handle, and thereby to lock said door, substantially as described.
2. A fastener of the character described,
comprising a door pull handle having a proectmgtongue and apivoted lever provided over thecasing, and a cam attached to the above application for Letters Patent; at
lever adjacent its pivot adapted to engage Freeport, Illinois, this 3d day of December,
said arm on movement of the lever from opposite the door to partially open the door, A.- D. 1913. said door also being tightly closed by en- FLOYD N. PERKINS. gagement of the lever with the cam attached W'itnesses:
to the door. I
In Witness whereof I- have signed the EMMA M. KNoRNsoHILD, HORACE H. TARBOX.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Washington, 1L0.
