DOOR-CLOSER.
Y Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 1.5, 1915.
Application led October 19, 1914. Serial No. 867,303.
T0 all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, RICHARD F. Ln BROCQ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, and KARL J. J. SCHMUTZLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Dorp Manor, Richmond county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door- Closers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. l
Our invention relates to improvements in door closers and the object of our invention is to produce a simple, inexpensive and positive apparatus in which a weight is used 1nstead of the customary spring, and in which the parts are assembled and arranged in such a manner that the operation of the device is absolutely positive 4so that the door is sure to close when it is released in an open position.
Our invention is also intended to provide a very inexpensive structure which canV be easily applied to a door and an adjacent wall or support, and which when used very frequently, as for instance on the door of a factory or other place, will not get out of order.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specilication, in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved door closing apparatus as applied to a door.V Fig. 2 is a sectional plan on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 isa section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, showing the sliding carriage in end elevation.
The door 10 is provided with a plate 11 which connects with a pintle 12 on the rod 13, and the latter is pivoted as shown at 14 to the stud 14a on the sliding carriage 15. Obviously the particular connection with the rod 13 is not important, as the essential thing is to have a pivotal connection by means of the rod and link between the door l0 and the sliding carriage 15.
The carriage 15 is preferably formed of plates 16 and 17 which are spaced apart as shown clearly in Fig. 3, and the stud lsL on the plate 17 is recessed on the under side to form a bearing or saddle which rides on the guiderod 19. This latter is horizontally arranged behind the door on the wall or other support adjacent to the door, the guide rod having its ends inturned and secured by means of plates 20 or otherwise to the adjacent wall or support. Thus when the door is opened or closed, the carriage 15 will slide horizontally on the rod 19.
Between the plates 15 and 16 of the carriage and preferably near the ends thereof, are rollers 2l which are arranged in pairs as shown clearly in the drawing, and these rollers serve to prevent friction, as they are engaged by the swinging leg 22 which enters vertically between the pairs of end rollers.l This leg 22 extends normally in a vertical position parallel with the back edge of the door as shown in Fig. 1, and at its upper end it merges into a head 23 which is pivoted near the top as shown at 24. In the head 23 is a curved cam slot 25 which is arranged in a generally vertical position, and this receives the pin 26 on the weighted arm 27, the latter extending in a generally horizontal position above the door, and being pivoted at one end as shown at 28, while its opposite or free end is provided with a weight 29. Obviously the arm 27 may be made sufficiently heavy without the weight, and it is equally obvious that any suitable anti-friction devices can be used to form the cam connection between the arm and the head 23.
The above described mechanism is extremely cheap and simple, and easily applied. When so applied and the door is opened, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the rod 13 will push the carriage 15 along the guide rod 19, and the carriage will swing the leg 22 to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and raise the weighted arm 27, as indicated by dotted lines in same figure. When the door is released, the weighted arm 27 will by means of its pin and cam slot connection with the head 23, cause the head and leg 22 to swing toward the door, thus moving the carriage 15 and closing the door by means of the connection between the carriage and the door already described.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that there is nothing to get out of order about this structure, and that the parts can be cheaply made, assembled, and put in place.
tive connection between the carriage and the door whereby the two will move in unison7 aY support to guide the carriage, a
Y swinging vertically arranged leg engaging Vat one end and Vadj acent to the door,
the carriage, anda pivoted weighted, arm crossing theleg and having a cam connection therewith.
2. A structure of the kind described coinprising a sliding carriage, an operative connection Vbetween the carriage and the door, a horizontally arranged guiding device for the carriage7 a swinging leg connected with the carriage, and a weighted arin pivoted having a cam slot and pin connection with the swinging leg.
' 3. A structure of the kind described co1nprising a horizontally arranged guide rod a carriage sliding on the rod, an yoperative connection between the carriage and door, a vertically arranged leg pivoted at the top and provided 'with a curved cani slot, anda weighted arm pivoted at one end having la pin entering the aforesaid 'cani slot.
'Copies of this patent may be obtained for and crossing the leg, said arin 1 Y 4. A door closer comprising Va 'horizon tally arranged guide rod adjacent toga door, Va carriage having a saddle vonone side to ride on the rod, a connection between/the saddle and the doorga swinging vertically arranged leg having a *freeV connectionrwith the carriage7 said leg having a curved canaV slot therein, and a weighted arin pivotedV at one end and crossing the leg, said arm having a pin which enters the aforesaid cani- 5. A door closer comprisinga horizontal guide rod'arranged adJacent to a door, a carriagevshding on the rod and having a doorV connection,` saidrcarriage comprising plates spaced apart, with Vrollers spacedV apart between the plates, a vertically arrangeds'wingiiig leg entering the carriage between opposed rollers, said leg having` a cam slot therein, and a weighted swinging arni crossing the leg vand havinga pin toV enter the aforesaid slot.;rv g Y RICHARD nbr Bamay KARL JOHANN JULiUs senimiziiia.
