OPERATING DOORS OF ELEVATOR-WELLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,187, dated June 21, 1881,

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN P. WYKoEF, of Rochester, Monroe county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Device for Operatingthe Doors of Elevator-Wells, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my, invention is to provide a new and improved device for operating the doors of elevator-wells.
The invention consists in projecting plates or tracks which are attached to the inner side of the doors and are inclined from the ends of the outer edges toward the middle of the inner edges of the door, against which plates or tracks 15 a roller mounted on a stud on the car presses, thus opening or closing the door accordingly as it presses against the upper or lower surface of the inclined tracks, the ends of which are hinged to swing inward toward the middle of the door to let the projecting roller pass after having opened or closed the door.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an inside elevation of an elevator-well, showing the ear in section and below the doors, which are closed,and Fig.2 is a cross-sectional elevation of Fig. 1, showing all the parts in the same position.

Projecting plates or bars, forming tracks A A and B and B are fastened to the inner surface of the doors (J in such a manner that the plates are inclined from the ends of the outer edges toward the middle of the inner edges of the doors 0 G which are provided with rollers D D, sliding on tracks E E. The upper ends 'of the plates or track A A are hinged to swing upward toward the inner edge of the door in the direction of the arrows m m but the hinged parts a a have a projection on the lower edge of the under surface, to prevent them from swinging in the inverse direction of the arrows m m farther than to form a right line with the plates A A Springs F F press the hinged parts a a in the opposite direction of the arrows m m. The hinged parts a a of the lower ends of the plates A A swing in the direction of the arrows an, are pressed in the reverse directions of these arrows by the springs 50 G G and are also provided with projections to prevent them from swinging beyond the right line of the plates A A it they swing in the direction of the arrows n n. In a like manner the plates B B have hinged parts b, b b and b at the ends, acted upon by springs H H J J and swing in the directions of the arrows d d and pp, corresponding to the plates A A Rollers K are mounted on pins L, projecting from the front of the elevator-car M in such a manner that they will pass under the projecting plates or tracks. There is to be one roller,
K, at each end of the car.
The operation is as follows: If the car M passes upward, the rollers K will strike the under side of the plates B B at their lower ends, and as these ends cannot swing in the inverse direction of the arrows p 19 any farther than the right line of the plates B B the rollers will slide along these plates or tracks, but at the same time the doors will be moved from each other until the rollers K reach the upper pivoted or hinged ends, I) b, of the plates B B which hinged ends swing in the direction of the arrows d d, and thus allow the rollers K K to pass. By this time the doors have been opened completely and the floor of the elevator-car is on a level with the floor N. The car is then stopped; but if the car moves upward the rollers K pass under the bars A A and as they cannot turn the ends a a of the same any farther, for the reasonsstated, they slide along the bars A A and push the doors toward each other; and when these rollers reach the upper ends of the plates A A the hinged parts a a swing in the direction of their arrows tolet the rollers pass. In descending the car opens and closes the doors in the same manner. If a door has been opened from the outside and left partially or entirely open, the car closes it automatically.
The doors can be opened and closed by hand in the ordinary manner without interfering with the working of the within-described device. 9 5
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A device for automatically opening and closing the doors ofelevator-wells, made sub- Ioo stantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a series of inclined projecting I or tracks with hinged ends acted upon by springs, and of a projection or projections on the car, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a device for automatically opening and closing the doors of elevator-wells, the plate or track A, constructed substantially as here- 15 in shown and described, with pivoted end pieces, a and a acted upon by the springsF and G, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
