M. RENSHAW.
DOOR SBGUREB.
No. 423,343. Pat-ented Marfll,1890.
Al ies-Z1,
UNITED STATES MORRISON RENSIIAIV, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
DOOR-S SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ECURER.
Patent No. 423,343, dated March 1 1, 1890.
Application filed March 30, 1889. Serial No. 305,360. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MoRRisoN RENSHAW, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Door-Checks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speoification, and in which- Figure I is a perspective view showing one form of my improved door-check. Fig. II is a similar view showing the check opened out, it being shown closed in Fig.1. Fig. III is an edge view showing the device in use.
My invention relates to a check to be ap plied to the bottom of a door; and it consists in features of novelty to be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
, The invention consists of plate 2, having an angle-piece or plate 1 hinged at 3, and to them at this point is also hinged a lip or short plate 4.
In use the plate 1 bears against the door, and the plate 2 is made to engage the floor by means of teeth or projections 5, formed on and projecting downward therefrom. As shown in Fig. III, the parts 1 and 2, if any pressure is brought to bear on the door, will be pre vented from moving in a vertical or in a horizontal direction by the tongue or plate 4 binding between the door-sill 6 and the inner edge of the door 7. Thus when any attempt is made to force the door open the pressure on the plate 1 will have a tendency to move the plate 2 in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. III, it being understood that the shoulders 2 of the hinge preventsthe plate 1 from moving any nearer to the plate 2 than shown in Figs. II and III-that is, prevents its movement in this backward direction. In the other direction the parts are susceptible of being folded, as shown in Fig. I, so that the device may be carried in the pocket. This tendency of the plate 1 to move toward the plate 2 being prevented, and the two being prevented from moving bodily in the direction of the arrow by the plate 4. binding between the sill and the door, a secure and permanent check is thus produced. I claim as my invention A pocket door-check consisting of two folding plates 1 and 2, connected by a pivot 3, said plate 2 having projections for engaging the floor, and a tongue 4:, hinged on pivot 3 and folding within said plates, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
MORRISON RENSHAW.
In presence of- EDW. S. KNIGHT, THOMAS KNIGHT.
