Be it known that I, THEoDoRE HAsWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacking-Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to that Iclass of brushes which are provided with a hollow handle which forms a receptacle to receive different articles and retain them in a compact and convenient form so as to be readily accessible when desired for immediate use.

The improvement consists essentially, of a tubular receptacle, preferably opened at both ends which ends are closed by suitable caps one cap of the blacking brush having a scraper attached or covers attached to the back of a hair, clothes or blacking brush and adapted to form a handle to be conveniently grasped when using the brush in the ordinary manner.

The improvement also consists of the novel features and the peculiar construction and combination of the parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the brush and tubular handle. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line X--X of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow.

The tubular handle B which may be opened at one or both ends is attached to the back of the brush A in any convenient manner and is of proper size to be conveniently grasped by the hand and receive the articles to be stored therein. The open end or ends of this handle may be closed bya cap or cover of any desired pattern and the same may be held to the handle by friction or positive means. For a clothes brush it is preferred to have the handle open at one end, only, and closed by a screw cap C as indicated in Fig. l. For

partment d is designed to receive the dauber D which is attached to the cap or cover F.

To use the form of brush shown in Fig. 2, the cap E is removed and the cover F detached from the handle when the dauber is inserted in the compartment e to receive a supply of blacking which is applied to the shoe in the ordinary manner, the polishing being effected in the usual way. When the handle is applied to clothes brushes a partition is generally dispensed with as the said 'handle is designed to receive such articles as tooth and nail brushes which generally eX- tend about the full length of the said handle. Obviously, if a partition b be employed shaving soap may be placed in one end of the handle and the shaving brush in the other end of the handle. The tubular handle B is generally attached to a plate G which projects on each side of the said handle and is designed to receive the screws or the fastening devices by means of which the handle is secured to the said brush.

The scraper H which is attached tothe cap or cover E is used to remove mud or other foreign substance from the shoe.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure byI Letters Patent, is

l. Ablacking brush attachment consisting of a tubular handle to receive the blacking and the dauber and open at one end, and having its open end provided with a cap to which is attached a scraper, the said cap forming a handle for the scraper and a cover for the open end of the tubular handle, substantially as set forth.

2. A blacking and polishing companion, consisting of a polishing brush, provided with a tubular handle which is open at both ends and divided into two compartments bya partition, one of the compartments receiving the blacking, a dauber to be inserted in one compartment and close the open end thereof, and a cap having a scraper attached thereto, said cap closing the open end of the other compartment and adapted to form a handle for the scraper, substantially as specified.
