To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY J. GAIsMAN,

a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, borough of Manhattan, 1n the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaving-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in brushes particularly adapted for use in shaving, and has for itsobject to provide a handle or holder adapted to contain the brush when not in use, with means to permit the brush to be held upon the handle or holder in positionv for use, and also to be hung down on one'side of the handle or holder with the bristles depending to permit water to drain downwardly therefrom and enable free access of air to the bristles for drying.

My invention comprises novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be morefully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.

The numeral 1 indicates a handle, shell or holder shown in tubular or cylindrical form, open at opposite ends, and provided at one end with a cover 2, shown hinged at one edge of the handle at 3, so as to close over the open end of the handle or to be swung toone side thereof, (Figs. 6 and 5). In the construction shown, cover 2 1s provided at its inner side with a spring clip 4 havingrounded bent ends 45 adapted to fit under the inwardly bent or flanged end portion 1 of handle 1 to hold the cover closed upon the latter. Within handle 1 is a reclprocative head 5 pivotally carrying the brush butt or ferrule 6 to which the hairs,

bristles, or the like 6 we'll-known manner. Butt or ferrule 6 is shown pivotally carried at 6" upon a lug or ear 5 projecting from head 5, whereby when head 5 is pushed outwardly to its limit Within the handle 1 the hinge pivot 6 will be beyond the end of the handle to permit the brush to swing and hang downwardly, as shown in Fig. 2. The brush butt 6 is provided with means to retain it in operating position upon head'5 and permit the brush to be swung away from said head. For this purpose I' have shown the butt 6 provided with a spring finger 7 adapted to engage a complemental fastening abutment 8 carried by head 5,said finger being shown provided with a depressed portion 7 and a curved end portion 7 to spring on and on the abutment 8. Head 5 is also shownprovided with an opening 5 vto receive the finger v7. By means of fin er 7 and abut-' ment 8 the brush may be retained upon head 5 in the operating position shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The cover 2 is shown provided with an opening 2" for the passage of finger 7, in the position of the parts shown in Fig. 6. Cover 2 is shown provided with a cutaway part 2 to receive the lug 5 whenthe head 5 is in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 6. While the head 5 may be pushed outwardly by pushing a finger in thelower open'end of handle 1, means may be provided for conveniently operating said head from the exterior of the handle. For this purpose handle 1 may be provided with one or more slots l receiving a stud or studs 8 are attached in any projecting from head 5 to the exterior of the holder in convenient position to be grasped by the fingers for moving head 5 and the brush longitudinally within the handle.

By means of my improvements the brush may be concealed within the handle or holder, and cover 2 closed upon the same, as in Fig. 4, when the device is not in use. When it is desired to use the brush the cover 2 is swung back and head 5 is pushed outwardly and the brush projected through the adjacent open end of the handle, as in Fig. 5, and while the brush may then be used in such position, it is preferable to'swing the brush to one side, to close cover 2 upon the handle (Fig. 2), and then swing the brush butt back Patented Feb. 26, 19178.
