Description

Sept. 1, 1931.1, R. T. CHRISTY HOLDER OR APPLIANCE FOR COSMETICS AND THE LIKE Filed Nov. 22, 1929 fi 1 O ,VUNITPED STATES PATENT OFFICE ROBERT T. CHRISTY, OF NEW YORK,
N. Y., ASSIGNOR. TO THE KURLASH COMPANY, h
inc, or ROCHESTER, NEW YORK HOLDER OR APPLIANCE FOR COSMETICS AND THE LIKE Application filed November 22, 1929. Serial No. 409,012.
The present invention relates to a holder or appliance particularly adapted for the convenient and compact retention of cosmetics or other consumable materials.
According to my invention, the cosmetic or other consumable material is mounted on a swingable member,the arrangement being such that in one position of said memher the material is fully protected and inclosed, while in another position, said material is'made readily accessible foruse. My invention also contemplatesthe equipment of the holder with one or more additional swingable elements, adapted to carry, for example, implements or devices that may be conveniently used with the consumable cosmetic or other material; according to my invention, the several swingable elements cooperate to provide a complete closure of the holder, thereby to protect its interior and the articles or materials therein from contamination, or the entrance of dust or dirt;
furthermore, the arrangement of the piv-.
otal mountings is such that no interference with the swinging movement of any appliance or instrument is encountered. Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following' detailed description thereof, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which' Fig. 1 is a top or edgewise View of the holder in closed condition.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of said holder in closed condition.
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2, but showing the holder in fully open condition.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the part shown open at the right hand side of Fig. 3, and equipped with a telescopic toilet or cosmetic appliance.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown my improved appliance in a form especially adapted to the holding of a mascarastick, or eyebrow pencil, in conjunction with a brush or the like, by which to smooth the lar uses,
eyebrows and tospreadthe coloring material or mascara uniformly; however, my invention is not to be limited to these particurexcept as specified in the appended claims.
The holder of my invention comprises a body portion preferably made from a metal stamping and having opposite side walls 1, 1, connected by an inegral b0tt0Il1;2,--tl18 body thereby having the form and section of a a relatively narrow deep channel. This channel section constitutingthe body is of substantially uniform depth, except at the ends; thereof; that is to say, the upper edges of the Walls 1, 1 are substantially parallel with the bottom 2 except atvthe extreme ends of said body, .and there, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the upper and lower edges of the walls 1, l are curved downwardly and upwardly, respectively, to meet each otherzat the points 3 and 4. In this way, the holder is not only given an attractive external appearance, but, as hereinafter described, the closure of the channel-shaped body, by means of the swinging members that carry the plurality of contained'devices or implements, is greatly facilitated.
One of these devices, in theillustrated form of my invention, may be a mascara stick ,5," as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the same being held. in a metallic clip 6 which is telescopically received in a member 7 for sliding movement outwardly or inwardly, either to extend said stick in an operative position beyond said member, or to retract said stickinto a pro-- tected position within end, the slidably mounted bracket fi has .a I projecting lug or lip 8 for engagement by the thumb or finger of the user, tosecure its movement in the member 7 for the retraction or extension of the stick 5, as desired.- Said member 7, for the accommodation of bracket 6 and stick 5, is preferably of channel formation asshown, of a width to allow its free reception between the walls 1, 1. of the holder; I the latter, nearthe point 4, are apertured for the passage of a transverse pivot pin 9, which passes through and forms the pivotal .mounting of the member 7. When the" latter is swung on said pivot into the closedposi said member to this tion shown by Fig. Q, to dispose the mascara stick 5, or other implement carried thereby, within the holder, the lug or lip 8 projecting from the open edge 10 bottoms against the lower Wall or bottom 2 of the holder, and
thereby serves to substantially register the closed channel edge 11 of member 7 with the upper edges of the side walls 1, 1. At the same time, a suitably curved closed portion 12, of the channel section 11, is brought into substantial alinement with the bottom 2 of the holder to provide an extension of the lat ter between its right hand terminus 13 .and the meeting point 4 of the upper and lower 15 side wall edges,- it being understood, of
9. open position of Fig. 3, or vice versa. From the foregoing, it will be seen that the channeled member 7 is of such form that, in its closed position, it will not only complete the bottom closure of the holder between the points 13 and 4,'but-will also serve as a top closure for the holder from the point 4 inwardly for a distance equal to the length of the closed channel edge 11,-the la ter termimating, as shown, in an upturned lip 14, pro- 395 jecting slightly above the upper edges of the sidewalls 1, 1, as a means to facilitate the seizureof saidmember 7, in order to move the same into open position v The other cosmetic implement or device with which my improved holder is shown equipped is a brush 15, the same, as here shown, being mounted in a shallow channellike member 16, which is secured to the holder by a transverse-pivot pin 17 near the upper -'edges of the walls 1, 1, and substantially midway between the point 3 and the lip 14 of member 7. The closed channel bottom 18 of.
member 16 is the means by which the remaining space between the upper edges of the side *walls 1, 1 of the holder is bridged over and closed in the position of the parts shown by Fig. 2,said channel bottom portion 18 cooperating with the channel bottom portion 11 to provide a substantially continuoustop sur- -face for the holder between the end points or extremities 3 and 4. To facilitate the swinging movement of the brush 15 into the operativeposition shown by Fig. 3, the channel bottom 18 has a lip or extension 19 that normally projects slightly over the point 3.
When the brush element is swung into open position by pressure of the finger against lip 19, the end opposite from said lip 19 engages a limiting stop preferably in the form of a transverse pin 20, connecting the side walls 1, 1 adjacent the point 3; this prevents the lip 19 from being depressed below the position shown in Fig. 3, so that said lip is always available for movement of the brush. The
65 above described mounting of brush 15, with its pivot pin 17 near the upper open edge of the holder, enables said brush to be swung freely from operative to inoperative position, and vice versa, without any wear upon or contact with its bristles from the walls of the holder.
' It is to be understood that the foregoing description of my invention is illustrative merely of one form or embodiment thereof; obviously, the invention is not limited in any sense tothe two swingable elements herein shown and described, but comprehends additional elements or devices, in similar relation to the walls 1, 1 of the holder.
I claim,
1. A holder for cosmetics and the like, said holder comprising a substantially deep channel-like casing open along one edge, a supporting member pivotedadjacent one end of said casing and adapted to swing into and out of said casing, and another supporting member pivoted in the open portion of said casing, the edges of said supporting members being adapted in their closed position to bridge the space between the open edges of said casing.
2. A holder for cosmetics and the like, said holder comprising a substantially deep channel-like casing open along one edge, a member pivoted adjacent one end of said casing and adapted to swing into said casing be tween the side walls thereof, an extensible support for a mascara stick or the like carried by said member, a second member pivoted at its intermediate portion to said casing adjacent its upper edge and adapted to swing into and out of said casing, and a brush carried by said second member, the two members cooperating in their closed positionsto provide a closure for the open edges of said casing.
' 3. A holder for cosmetics and the like, said holder comprising a substantially deep channel-like casing open along one edge, a member pivoted adjacent one' end of said casing and extending more than half the length of said casing, said member being adapted to swing into said casing between the side walls thereof, an extensible support for a piece of cosmetic material, carriedby said member, a second member pivoted in the open portion of said casing adjacent its upper edge and adapted to swing into and out of said casing. a. stop to limit the movement of said second member inits open orclosed position, and a brush carried by said. second member.
