BUST-PAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,812, dated June 6, 1893.

Application filed April 8, 1892.

To all `whom it may con/cern:

Be it known that I, MARGUERETE M. PAR- RELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bust Pads or Shields; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a bust pad; and is designed to improve the form of the wearer and serve as a shield to protect the breast from injury or undue pressure and secure thereto proper ventilation and obviate sweating.

A further object of the invention is to provide a bust pad that will be adjustable within certain limits and which can be readily attached permanently or otherwise to the corset or other garment, and which will be light and comfortable to the wearer.

The improvement consists of the novel features which will be hereinafter more particularly described and referred to in the claims and which are delineated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front View of a bust pad em bodying my invention. Fig..2 is a side view ofthe pad. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the stays .comprising the invention, showing the outline or pattern of each.

The pad is concavo-convex to conform to the breast and is composed of the four stays A, B, C and D, which may be formed of any suitable light elastic material, such as steel which is covered with muslin or other fabric, celluloid or similar substance. The stayA is ogee shaped curving symmetrically in opposite directions from a central point. The stay B is considerably longer than the stay A and curves at its ends to the same side for a short distance from the extremities, the intermediate portions between the curved ends being straight. The stay C is straight at its lower portion for about one-third its length, the remaining two-thirds being a simple curve, which is opposite to the upper curved end of the stay The stayD is straight and is designed to connect the stays A, B and C to- Serial No. 428,331. ends by suitable fastenings, as eyelets, which will admit of the adjustability of the pad to conform to the figure of the wearer. The ulpper portion of the pad extends over the breast and the lower portion projects down to near the waist and is desired to form the means of attachment of the pad to the garment.

The device may or may not be attached to a garment, the manner of its application depending upon the caprice of the wearer. By reason of the approximately concave form of the upper portion of the pad, the latter, conforming to the form of the wearer, will be retained in proper position. The lower end of the device will be of sufficient length to be gathered in with the garments at the waist line and held by them in the desired position. Should positive means be found necessary in some instances to retain and hold the pad in proper position, any means or contrivauces that may suggest themselves to the wearer may be provided to effect the desired result and as the same form no part of the present invention I do not deem it necessary to set forth how the same can be accomplished.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

` 1. A bust pad composed of the stays A, B, C which are pivotally connected together at their upper ends, the lower ends of the Stays B and C being pivotally connected together and extended to form a shank to be gathered in with the garments at the waist, the upper portion of the stay C curving outward, the stay A curving in an opposite direction tothe curved portion of the stay C and having its lower end piv'otally connected with the stay B at the base of the said shank portion, and roo the cross stay D connecting stays A, B and C and made adjustable to adapt the pad to the form of the wearer, substantially as described.

2.
