B. FOLEY.
CORSET.
No. 458,309. Patented Aug. 25, 1891.
A S INVENTUFII UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMMA FOLEY, OF NEW YORK, N Y.
CORSETl SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,309, dated August 25, 1891.
Application filed March 14, 1390. Serial No. 343,948. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern,-
Be itknown that I, EMMA FOLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Bodice and Bust-Supporter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to corsets wherein an underwaist or corset is so constructed as, while preserving its own elasticity, to afford a support for the bosom and beautify the figure without placing weight or pressure upon the hips or other parts of the body.
My invention is shown in the accompanying' drawings, in wl1ich Figure 1 presents a front and side view as worn upon the body; 2, a back and side view as worn, and Fig. 3 a front and side view of one-half of my improved corset laid flat.
My improved corset and bust-supporter may be of any suitable material, and may have any arrangement of stays and other parts to provide the desired configuration, strength, elasticity, or other features, and may be secured by hooking, lacing, or in any usual way. I claim nothing-in respect to any portion of the corset except the bust-supporters proper, the essential features of which are the curved stay h, extending from the central front stay f at the division-line i, as shown in the drawings, Fig. 3, and passing beneath and around the bust and terminating at a point on the upper line of the corset. To this are secured the cups of the bust-supporters, consisting of horizontal stays a a, preferably flat and extending from the stay f and terminating upon the stay h, to which they are secured in any usual manner. These are adjusted to provide the convexity and contour desired, as shown in Fig. 3, and are held in their relative positions by longitudinal stays Z), to which they are secured in any usual manner at their intersecting points. The weight of my improved corset and bustsupporter is carried over the shoulders by the bands 0 C. A band may be attached to the lower portion of the corset, passing around the waist for the adjustment of skirts, &c.; or, if desired, the corset may be extended by adding thereto a skirt or other drapery of suitable length.
The object of my invention is to furnish an improved corset, so arranged and adapted as Without loss of elasticity and Without pressure upon the body to preserve the contour of the figure and support the bust.
The advantage of my improved corset and bust-supporter is that it holds the bust in the desired position and form without any pressure upon the body or organs, or interfering with the respiration and movements of the body.
Having described my invention, what I claim is A corset comprising a body and bust portions and vertical front stays, each bust portion being re-enforced by acurved stay 72,extending from the front stay beneath and around the bust and terminating at a point near the upper edge of the body portion and by horizontal and vertical stays, said horizontal stays extending from the front stay across the bust portion to the said curved stay h, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 12th day of March, 1890.
