SAFETY-ENVELOPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,170, dated April 25, 1893.
Application filed August 13, 1892. Serial No. 442,964. (No model.) Patented in France April 16. 1892, No. 220,990.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARGUERITE RUAUX, a resident of Paris, France, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety-Envelopes, (for which a French patent was issued on the 16th day of April, 1892, No. 220,990,) of which the following specification contains a full, clear, and exact description.
According to my invention the envelope is formed With a pocket, and a gummed folding flap as usual, and opposite to the latter with additional flaps to be folded over the letter or inclosure and inserted with it into the pocket. One of these additional flaps is coated with adhesive substance so that it may be pasted to the bodyof the envelope. The closure thus formed cannot be reached except by tearing the envelope.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the envelope. Fig. 2 illustrates the method of folding. Fig. 3 represents the envelope completely closed. Fig. 4 shows an envelope in which the pocket is more easily formed. Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate in plan and section the envelope shown in Fig. 4, when closed. Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing the inelosure partly inclosed by the flaps, as it is about to be inserted into the pocket.
My new envelope (Figs. 13) has the pocket formed by the two parts D E, and the gummed flap F for closing the pocket, part F. being gummed on the face that is visible in Fig. 1. It has also the flaps A. B. C. Flap A is gummed on the face not visible in Fig. 1, and the part C may also be gummed on the side exposed .in Fig. 1.
The letter or inclosure L may be placed on part B, and the gummed surfaces ofA and 0 being moistened, the auxiliary flaps are folded over, and with the inclosu re inserted into the pocket, as shown in Fig. 2. Part A on being As shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the pocket may be formed by the side flaps 1, 2, when folded over upon the part 3. at the points cab to form the ordinary closing flap 3. Parts 6,5, 4 correspond respectively with the parts A. B. (J. of Fig. 1, and are similarly folded, as shown in Fig. 6, upon theletter or inclosure 7.
Other modifications may obviously be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and any suitable materials may be used in the manufacture of the envelopes.
I claim as my invention- 1. A safety envelope having a pocket and closing flap of ordinary or suitable construction, and auxiliary flaps to be folded around the letter or inclosure, on both sides thereof previous to insertion into the pocket said auxiliary flaps being folded around the inclosure in the same direction as that in which they are finally turned for insertion into the pocket one of said flaps being coated with gum on a face that is turned inward, so as to form a closure that is inaccessible without tearing the paper, substantially as described.
2. In a safety envelope the combination with a pocket and closing flap for the same, of a series of continuous auxiliary flaps adapted to be folded around the letter or inclosure, previous to insertion into the pocket, said auxiliary flaps being folded around the inclosure in the same direction as that in which they are finally turned for insertion into the pocket one of said flaps being gummed on the face which comes in contact with the inner face of the pocket, so that when folded and gummed the seam or joint will be protected by one of the auxiliary flaps, as well as the closing flap, substantially as described.
