UNDERSHIRT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 495,316, dated April 11, 1893.

To all whom t may concern,.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. DREW, of Woonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Undershirts and Like Garments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which I have shown a perspective view of the improved garment.

ro The invention relates more especially to undershirts although it is of course applicable to garments ot' various kinds; and has for its object to constructa garment which will readily conform itself to the body of the wearer,

and have a better appearance than like garments heretofore made and possesses other advantages presently to be ascertained.

The improved undershirt consists of a body portion, arm pieces, and a yoke, the body porzo tion being out with gores to which portions of the arm pieces and the yoke are secured, the arm pieces and yoke projecting above the gores and secured together above the gores, forming shoulder straps. As'usually con- 2 5 structed the straps of the body portion were continued upwardly to meet across the top of the shoulders where a seam joined the meeting ends; the yoke and arm portions being then attached entirely to the edges of the garment 3o and having no other function than to ornament the article. This latter arrangement resulted in a doubling up of the shoulder pieces owing to their width and caused great discomfort owing to the uncomfortable seam.

In the drawing a is the body portion of the garment cut with the gores b and c. The yoke may consist .of a suitable edging or lace susceptible of various iornamentation, which is attached to the body of the garment at e and to the inner edgesof the gores, but having 4o the portions e2 extending beyond the gores forming loops for the shoulder straps. The ends of the yoke meet in the rear of the garment so that no seam encumbers the shoulders. To the outer edges of the gores the arm portions d are attached having the extended portion d projecting above the gores and secured to the yoke at d2. The meeting edges of these arm piecesv d are joined under the arms, so that no transverse seam occurs across 5o the shoulders.

I claim- Theimproved undershirt made up ofa body portion, gores on the upper part of -the garment, a yoke secured to the body portion and to the inner edges of the gores and projecting above the gores, arm pieces secured to the outer edges of the gores and projecting above the gores, the arm pieces and yoke being secured together above the gores as and for the 6o purposes set forth.
