UNITED STATES PATENT ()EEIG WILLIAM N. WINFIELD, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
BLANK BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 494,360, dated March 28, 1893.
Application filed December 6, 1892. Serial No. 454,232. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM N. WINFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and-State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blank Books, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in blank books, and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of a detachable blotter, and the means of securing the blotter to the back cover of the book, and further in the peculiar construction of the hinge for the blotter all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a blank book showing my blotter detached. Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing the blotter as in use. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line woc in Fig. 1, showing the manner of forming the pocket in the back of the book.
The blank book comprises the usual leaves A, front cover B and back-cover O hinged together in the usual mannerapreferably covered with leather, as for a good quality of blank book. The leather is shown at D in Fig. 3, the ends E thereof on the back cover extending beyond the ends of the cover and being turned inward and secured to a leaf of paper or card board F forming between that leaf and the back cover a pocket G. The leaf F is preferably covered by a thin sheet of paper H to give a finished appearance to the inside of the cover. With this construction it will be observed that the ends of the pocket are formed of leatherand thus the life of the pocket in use is very greatly lengthened.
I is a blotter and J is a securing strip preferably of a strip of cardboard or similar material, of the same length as the blotter and secured thereto by a wide flexible hinge strip the Width of the strip being substantially equal to the thickness of the leaves of the book. The parts being thus constructed, the securing strip J is insertedinto the pocket G leaving the hinge and blotter extending outside. The blotter may be turned into the book at any page, as shown at Fig. 2, either at the back or front of the book, as the hinge is of sufficient width to span all the leaves and allow the insertion of the blotter at the front or at any other point.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination in a blank book, of a pocket formed at the back thereof, a strip adapted to fit in said pocket, a blotter and a flexible hinge connecting the strip and blotter, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a blank book, of the pocket formed on the back cover thereof, a rigid strip J adapted to fit in said pocket, the blotter and the flexible hinge K, of a width equal substantially to the thickness of the leaves of the book, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a blank book, of a book cover, the leather cover D therefor, the end extensions E of said cover, the leaf F within the cover to which the ends of the extensions E are secured, the stiffening strip J adapted to be secured in the pocket between the leaf F and the back cover, the flexible hinge K at the outer edge of said strip and the blotter Isecured to said hinge, the parts being arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM N. WIN FIELD.
