UNITE FFICE.
POCKET-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,249, dated March 28, 1893.
Application filed December 29,1891. Serial No. 416,453. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, JOHN I. OovINGToN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PocketBoxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of traveling paraphernalia adapted to be carried in the pocket, and consists in an improved construction of a pocket box arranged to serve as a candle stick whenever required, to cut off the ends of cigars, and to hold matches and a candle, all as more particularly hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 represents a top view of the pocket box embodying my invention, a portion of the casing being broken away to show the interior. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. 1, showing the perforated cutter blade and Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the cutter blade and candle holder. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my improved box showing the candle in position for lighting. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional View on line a; w of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention I form the boxin any approved manner from sheet metal or any other suitable material. I divide the interior of the box by a wall or partition 1 forming thereby a receptacle 2 which I utilize for matches as shown and a receptacle 3 in which I place a candle 4. The candle receptacle is provided with a cover or lid 5 hinged to the box in any approved manner. A well known spring catch 6 provided with a press button 7 on the outside of the box may be used as a means of opening the candle receptacle and keeping it closed. I lay no claim to this catch or the means of hinging said lid. The mouth or opening of the match receptacle is closed by a lid 8 hinged to the box at 9. To the inner side of this lid I secure a cutter or knife 10 which co-operates with a circular opening 11 in one side of the box, the said opening being about the size, in diameter, required in cutting off the tip ends of cigars. When the lid is opened the tip of a cigar may be inserted in the opening in the side of the box, and upon closing the said lid the cutter thereon severs the tip from the end of the cigar. I lay no claim, however, to the combination broadly of a box with an opening and a cutter attached to a lid, for cutting 01f the tip ends of cigars.
My invention consists essen tiallyin making the cutter or knife 10 with a circular opening therethrough which when the lid is closed will register with the opening 11 in the side of the box, the object of this opening in the blade being to provide a receptacle or holder for the candle hereinbefore referred to. Whenever it is desired to usethe candle it is taken from its receptacle 5 and its butt end inserted through the hole in the cover and the hole in the blade or cutter. The box can then be laid down on its fiat side and the candlev will stand erect, the box serving as a candle stick or holder by which it can also be carried about.
To insure the perpendicular position of the candle and its steadiness I provide thelid, next to the inside of the under side of the box, with a projection 12 having an opening 13 into which latter the butt end of the candle can be inserted after having been passed through the openings in the upper side of the box and cutter. The candle will be held fairly well without this additional support and guide but with it its steadiness and upright position are insured and I, therefore, prefer to use it.
I am aware that a match box having an aperture in one of its sides has been combined with a plate provided with an aperture having a sharp edge, the two apertures arranged to coincide when the box is closed, but in this construction a V-shaped trough is placed in the box opposite and close to the aperture which prevents the insertion of a candle to a sufticient extent to retain the same in position. To this construction I lay no claim, but
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
1. A pocket box having an aperture in one of its sides and a cutt'erhaving a cutting edge arranged to co-operate therewith and provided with an aperture to allow the passage of a candle said aperture located to register with the aperture in the box when the cutter' is in its closed position the interior of the box opposite the aperture being unobstructed ICO so that when the butt end of a candle is inwhen the butt end of a candle is inserted serted through the said apertures it may rest through the said aperture it may rest on the on the opposite side of the box, substantially opposite side of the box, and within the ap- I 5 as described. erture in said projection substantially as de- 5 2.
