MATCH-Box AND CIGAR-C TTER.
Specification or Letters iateiit.
Patented J nine 6, 1916.
Application filed December 7,1915. Serial no. 65,491.
T 0 all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ERNEST OLnnNBUsoH,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brook'- lyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Match-Box and Cigar-Gutter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to a combined match box and cigar cutter and has for an object the provision of an improved arrangement whereby a package of matches is held properly in position and properly protected while certain parts of the device may be utilized for cutting and severing the end of a cigar.
Another object in view is to provide a box formed in parts and arranged with turned-over ears for receiving packages of matches, these members being arranged in connection with a catch or retaining member which acts in the double capacity of a catch and retaining member for parts of the box and also acts as a cutter when the parts are being closed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure l is a perspective view of a box embodying the invention, the parts thereof being shown open; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, the same being shown closed; Fig. 3 1s a sect on through Fig. 2
on line 33; Fig. 4 is an edge view of the' structure shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a side view of the upper part of the structure shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the box as a whole, which is divided into sections 2 and 3 connected together by a hinge 4. Section 2 acts as the body of the box while section 3 acts as the lid. The section or body 2 is provided with ears or retaining members 5 and 6 for receiving the ends 7 of the matches 8 whereby the matches are properly held in the box. The matches 8 do not extend to the top of the body 2, whereby a space is provided for receiving the end of a cigar when the device is used as a cigar cutter.
In order to use the device as a cigar cutter body 2 is provided with a pressed-up V-shaped portion 9 having an aperture 10 arranged therein whereby this portion is somewhat resilient but acts with the V- shaped projection 11 as means for cutting a cigar, as shown in Fig. 3, and also as means for retaining the lid or section 3 in a closed position. Therparts are so proportioned that the pressed-out portion 11 presses against the resilient pressed-up portion 9 so that the friction created by these .parts pressing against each other causes these parts to act as a catch for holding the box closed, as shown in Fig. 4.
In operation, when it is desired to use the box the same may be opened by pulling against the sections 2 and 3 so that the parts will be moved from the position shown in Fig. 4: to that shown in Fig. l. A match is then removed and if it is desired to light a cigar the end of the cigar is passed through the aperture 10 and then lid 3 is closed. The closing of lid 3 causes the pressed-out portion 11 acting with member 9 to sever the end of the cigar. In this way the cigar will be cut and the box will be locked in a closed position simultaneously. The match may then be used in the usual manner for lighting the cigar or other purpose.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, a body and a lid, means for hinging said body and lid together, said body being provided with a V-shaped pressed-out portion and said lid being provided with a com plementary V-shaped pressed-out portion adapted to fit the pressed-out portion on the body and act in the double capacity of a cigar cutter and a catch for holding the lid closed. g
2. A match box and cigar cutter comprising a body provided With means for clamping a package of matches therein, a lid hinged to said body, said body being formed with an apertured projection and said lid being provided with a projection coacting with the projection on the body and acting as a cutting member when moved across the apertured projection when the lid is closed for severing a cigar extending through said apertured projection.
3. In a device of the character described, a body, a lid hinged thereto, said body being provided with an apertured pressed-out portion, and a solid pressed-out portion arranged on said lid and adapted to slidingly fit against the apertured pressed-out portion and to overlap the aperture thereof, whereby a cigar passing through the aperture of said apertured portion will be severed when the lid is closed.
4. In a device of the character described, a body provided With a V-shaped pressedout portion having an aperture arranged substantially centrally of the V whereby said V will be somewhat resilient, and a cap prorided with a V-shaped cutting member pressed up therefrom, said cutting member being of substantially the same shape as said V-shaped pressed-out portion and aranged to slide thereunder and cut a cigar extending therethrough, the resiliency of said apertured pressed-out portion acting against the cutter for producing a retaining structure for holding the cap closed in addition to a cutting structure.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
