COMBINED MATCH-CASE LAND CIGAR-TIP CUTTER.
Sp ecification of Letters Patent. 'Pgytgntgdl Egg, 4 1917,
I Application filedMay 15, 1915. Serial at. 28,271..
This invention relates to improvements in and relating to an improved combined match-case and cigar tip cutter,and has for an object to provide a device of this character which will be convenient in size and operation, attractive in appearance, and which will lend itself readily to the usesof the smoker. Another object is to provide such a device which is simple in construction and inexpensive of manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, our invention comprises the novel features, construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings," and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of our improved match-box and cigar cutter;
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same opened;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of our improved device in open position; 7
Fig. 4. is a sectional view thereof closed;
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the cutting blade; and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view with parts broken away of a slightly modified form of construction.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, our invention comprises a lower member 10 and an upper or cover member 11 hinged at 12, and provided with the rimmed portions 1 1 and 15 respectively, the rim 14 being so shaped as to retain in the lower member 10, a packet of paper matches in the usual manner. A snap-catch 16 provided on the rim 14 is adapted to engage a recess 17 in the rim 15 for holding the box in closed position.
A circular opening 18 is provided in the upper portion of the box for receiving the tip end of the cigar. At either side of the said opening, on the inner side of the cover 11, are disposed the guide members 19 and 20, in which the cutting member 21 having a V-shaped cutting edge 22 is adapted to slideloack and forth across the said opening 18. A stop 23 is provided in the guide member 19, which engages a recessed portion 24: of the cutting member to limit the outward movement thereof. The said cutting member has an enlarged portion 25 at the outer end thereof to enable the same to p be operated, and is provided with an elongated opening 26 near the said outer end,
which in closed position of the box is engagedby the snap-catch 16 to prevent movement of the cutting member. This also prevents closing of the box until the cutting member is pushed completely into the box andthe openinglS entirely closedthereby. A projection 27 or a chain-attaching ring or the like 27 as shown in Fig. 6, is provided in the lower portion 10 .of the box, which with the enlarged end of the cutting blade facilitates opening of the box.
In operation, the box is first opened, thereby releasing the cutting member from the snap-catch 16, whereupon the cutting member is drawn out of the box to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, exposing the opening 18 for insertion of the tip end of the cigar. By pushing the cutting member inwardly, the end is cut off, and the cigar may be lighted while the box is still open.
Instead of a straight edge side or bezel, rounded or bent-in sides or bezels may be used, and, of course, instead of the guiding means shown, point or pin guiding means or any other suitable guiding means may be provided.
While we have illustrated our invention as applied to a match-box, it is obvious that the same may be used to advantage with a cigar-case, hinged watch-charm, or other similar constructions, so that we do not desire to be limited to the preferred and satisfactory form shown and described, except as may be required by the appended claims.
We claim 1. A device of the character described, comprising a, receptacle provided with a hinged portion, having an aperture therein adapted to receive the tip end of a cigar, a cutting member in said portion movable relatively to said hinged portion while the latter is stationary in the open position to cover and uncover said aperture, and means on said receptacle adapted to engage said cutting member when the receptacle is closed to prevent movement of said cutting memher.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a receptacle provided With a hinged portion having an aperture therein adapted to receive the tip end of a cigar, a cutting member in said portion adapted to be moved relatively to said hinged portion to cover and uncover said aperture, locking means on said receptacle adapted to lock said hinged port-ion closed, said locking means adapted to engage said cutting member in closed position to prevent movement of said cutting member.
3; A device of the character described comprising a receptacle provided with a hinged portion, having an aperture therein adaptedto receive the tip end of a cigar,
guiding meanson said hinged portion, a cutting member provided With an enlarged outer end, slidable in said guiding means and adapted to beanoved relatively to said hinged portion Whilethe latter is stationary in open position to cover and uncover said aperture, means adapted to limit the movement of said cutting member, and means on said receptacle adapted to engage the said cutting member in closed position to prevent movement of said cutting member.
4. A device of the character described,
aperture, and a fixed lug on said receptacle, 40
said cover portion adapted to bedisengaged from said catch on said receptacle by forcing said cover portion away from said receptacle by means of said enlarged end of said outtingmember and said fixed lug. 4
5. A device of the character described, com-prising a receptacle body,a coverhinged thereto, a cutter sl idable on said cover, and a catch on the receptacle body arranged to engage the hinged cover to hold it in the 5 closed position and also arranged to engage the cutter to lock it against sliding When the cover isclosed.
In testimony, that we claim the foregoing as :our invention, We have signed our names '5 in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
