STOVEPIPE FASTENER- No. 491,949. Patented P9914; 1893.
INVENTOQ? Nrrnn STATES PATENT OFFIC JESSE E. NILES, OF PONTIAC, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO MARTIN XV. BLOOMBURG, OF SAME PLACE.
STOVEPI PE- Application filed July 14, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JESSE E. NILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pontiac, county of Oakland, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stovepipe-Fasteners; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to stove pipe holders and has for its object an improvement in the means of securing a stove pipe into the chimney opening, or of securing the stove pipe to the floor in cases where it passes through a vertical opening in the ceiling and floor of an apartment above that in which the stove is located.
Another object is to secure the joints of a long section of piping securely together so as to prevent them from coming apart.
These results are secured by the device shown in the drawings in which,
Figure 1, shows the device attached to a horizontal pipe in a position to hold it securely to the chimney. Fig. 2, shows the device secured to a vertical pipe passing through the ceiling and floor of an upper apartment. Fig. 3, shows the device used with a wedge instead of a thumb screw on Figs. 1 and 2.
A, B, and 0, indicate joints of a stove pipe, to one of which A, is riveted a yoke or guide a, about five or six inches from the end of the pipe A, which it is proposed to insert into the chimney. The yoke or guide a, is tapped and has connected with it a thumb screw b. Under the yoke a, and between it and the pipe A, and on the outside of the pipe A, passes a short piece of strap-metal c, of which one end 6, is bent outward at right angles, and the other end is provided with a perforation cl, the strap of metal 0, is movable under the yoke a, and after being adjusted to a desired position is secured in that position FASTENER.
atent No. 491,949, dated February 14, 1893.
Serial No. 439,982. (No model.
it. Through the perforation d, is passed the end of a wire W, that extends along the lengths of pipe as far as may be desired and is secured to the pipe by short pieces of binding wire w, w, 141 or instead of using short pieces of binding wire, the main wire may if preferred be bent around the pipe and secured to it by a clove hitch.
In using the invention to secure a pipe into a chimney, the strap 0, is placed under the yoke a, and the angled end 6, pushed out beyond the end of the pipe some distance, and until it can be pushed through the hole in the chimney far enough to permit the length of the pipe A, to pass into the hole; the length of pipe A, is then pushed into the hole as far as may be desired, the strap 0, is drawn backward until the angled part e, catches against the inner side of the chimney; the thumb screw 17, is then turned down and secures the first length of pipe in place, the wire W, ,is then attached to the strap 0, and secured to the remaining lengths of pipe. All the lengths of pipe which it is desired to use may be placed together before the end of the pipe A, is placed in the chimneyor afterward as may be most convenient.
To use the fastener in connection with the vertical pipe it is passed through the vertical hole inside the thimble usually employed before the pipe A, is passed through the hole, and is secured under the yoke a,in precisely the same way.
The device is extremely useful in connection with vertical pipe, as it enables the entire pipe to be supported from the floor above, which is very desirable at times when it is desired to erect stoves or clean them out, or to hold the pipe suspended without any support beneath it.
In place of the thumb screw 1), a wedge 19, may be employed but the thumb screw is the preferable form because of the liability of the wedge to shake loose in consequence of the vibrations of the house, and consequent vibrations of the pipe.
by turning the thumb screw b, tightly against What I claim is-- The combination of the stove-pipe A, a strap In testimony whereof I sign this specifica- 0 having one end, 6, bent at an angle and tion in the presence of two witnesses. adapted to engage in the chimney, a clamping piece, a, permanently secured to said pipe, JESSE E. NILES. and a clamping screw 1) engaged therein and Witnesses:
adapted to clamp the strap, substantially as CHARLES F. BURTON,
and for the purpose set forth. EFFIE I. CROFT.
