Description

PATENTED AUG. 13, 1907.
G. L. SHEAD. LOCKING ATTACHMENT FOR SMOKE PIPES.
APPLIOATION FILED OUT-9.1905.

GIFFORD L. SHEAD, OF PLAINFIELD, WISCONSIN.
LOCKING ATTACHMENT FOR SMOKE-PIPES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1907.
Application filed October 9, 1905. Serial No. 281,893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GIFFORD L. SHEAD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plainficld, in the county of Waushara and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Attachments for Smoke Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed, its object being to provide a simple and effective device for locking the end of a smoke pipe in position after the latter has been connected to a chimney or fine, said device being capable of adjustment to the various thicknesses of chimneywalls to which it is attached.
In the drawings: Figure 1 represents a sectional view of a fragment of a smoke pipe and chimney with my device attached thereto; Fig. 2, a cross-section of the same, and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the locking attachment detached.
Referring by letter to the drawings, a indicates a smoke pipe section which is fitted into an opening I) in a chimney wall 0, said chimney and pipe being illustrated to better show the application'of my device thereto.
It frequently happens through various causes thata pipe when fitted to a chimney will become loose and pull out, thus causing a defective draft and liability of serious consequences resulting from the escape of gas. My device is designed to obviate these difficulties and, as illustrated in Fig. 1, is inserted through the chimney hole b and clamped between the faces of the chimney wall 0 previous to the insertion of the pipe a, the details of said device being fully set forth hereinafter.
wall, in opposition to a clamp E, which grips the outer face thereof. The clamp is formed with an arm F, which rests upon one face of the strip A and is adjustably secured thereto, by means of a clip G, which is riveted to said arm and laps over the edges of said strip.
For the purpose of holding the clamp E in its adjusted position, the arm F thereof is provided at its end with a lug H which engages one of the series of perforations D, in the strip and thus firmly clamps the rear portion of the device to the chimney between the inner and outer faces of the wall as shown in Fig. 1, of the drawings. Secured to the foot 13, at the rear end of the strip is a spring clip D which is bent over and forward approximately parallel with the strip A, its end being slightly upturned to receive the edge of the smoke-pipe a, the latter being provided with a hole I which is adapted to receive the projection C of the aforesaid strip, when said pipe is in position, and thus securely lock the same against pulling out.
By the above description it will be seen that the locking attachment may be adjusted and secured to any thickness of wall, and when the pipe is inserted between the spring clip and strip A, so that its hole I will engage the projection C, it will be impossible to disengage said pipe.
While I have shown and described the adjustable clamp E and clip in two parts, it is obvious the same may be in one piece, and that in place of a hole in the pipe, an indenture may be substituted without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is A locking-attachment for smokepipes comprising a strip having an upturned projection at its outer end, :1 depending; foot at the opposite end of the strip, a forwardly inclined spring secured to the foot, said strips having a series of longitudinal perforations adjacent to the outer end thereof, a clamping member provided with an arm, a clip secured to the arm for engagement with the aforesaid strip, and a lug projecting from said arm for engagement with the apertures of the strip.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Plainfield in the county of Waushara and State of Wisconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
GIFFORD L. SHEAD.
