Application filed February 17. 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALLEN LEE THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Com bined Flue- Thimbles and Stovepipe Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in flue thimbles.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a flue thimble which can be readily and easily adjusted to various sizes of flue openings.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for securing the end of a stove pipe in the thimble.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple, strong, durable, and inexpensive in construction, efficient and reliable in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, and in which similar reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views: Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a stove pipe and the wall of a flue, illustrating the application of the device constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the adjustable flue thimble detached, showing the key for clamping the ends of the same together in its locked position; Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the key detached from the thimble prior to its insertion thereon; Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the stove pipe and thimble taken on the plane of theline 4'4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a central vertical sectional view of the stove pipe and the wall of the flue, showing a slightly modified form of invention applied thereto; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the modified form detached from the flue opening; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a portion of the inner end .of the modified Specification of Letters Patent. i Patented N 14 1916.
Serial No. 78,945. 1
form; Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view taken through the stove pipe and the flue opening, taken on the line 88 of Fig. 5; and Fig. 9 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through one side of the modified form of the invention showing the position of the key in dotted lines.
In the embodiment illustrated, the numeral 1 represents a flue, and 2 a circular opening through the wall 3 of the same. Disposed in the opening 2 is a metallic cylindrical split shell or thimble 4, the edges of which are arranged in overlapping relation. Extending laterally and outwardly from the opposite ends of the thimble 4 are flanges 5, the latter being provided with alined stops, here shown in the form of sets of notches 6. One edge of the thimble is provided with a reduced portion 7, from the free edge of which extends a lateral flange 8 to form a suitable shoulder for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The overlapping edges of the thimble 4 are clamped together by a suitable clamping member or key 9 which is substantially of U-shaped construction, the arm 10 thereof being shorter in length than the other arm 11,, and having its free end curved substantially upon itself to provide a hook 12, the purpose of which will be hereinafter. described. To apply this key 9 to the thimble 4, it is moved longitudinally of the same, the long arm 11 being engaged with the outer side of the reduced portion 7, while the short arm 10 is engaged with the inner side of the inner edge of the thimble. The ends of the arm 11 are received in a set of the aforesaid alined notches 6 to prevent movement thereof relative to that edge of the thimble l, while one edge of the intermediate 7 portion of said arm 11 bears against the flange 8. By this'arrangement, it may be seen that the overlapping edges of the thimble 4 are securely clamped together, and
owing'to the fact that there are a number of'sets of'alined notches 6, the diameter of fectively secure the pipe 13 in place, one end of a flexible element, here shown in the form of a wire 14-, is secured over the hook member 12 and the other end secured to the stove pipe in any suitable manner, preferably by extending it and hooking it around one end of one of the sections of said pipe, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawings.
In Figs. 5 to 9 of the drawings, a modified form of the invention is shown, the ends of the long arm 11 of the key 9 being extended through slots 15 arranged in the thimble 4: adjacent the beforen'ientioned notches 6. The portions 16 of the thimble disposed between the ends thereof and these notches 15 are slightly offset laterally, thus providing an eflicient means for retaining the arm 11 -in position and causing a more eflective binding action between the overlapping edges of the thimble, as can be clearly understood by reference to Fig. 9 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without a more extended explanation.
Various changes in form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a flue thimble having overlapping edges, a flange extending laterally from one of said edges, stops arranged at the opposite ends of said thimble, and a U-shaped key engaging the inner and outer sides of said thimble, said'key also engaging said flange and said stops.
2. A device of the class described comprising a. flue thimble having overlapping edges, flanges extending laterally from the ends of said thimble and having alined notches therein a shoulder arranged on one of the edges of said thimble, and a U-shaped key engaging the inner and outer sides of said thimble, said key also engaging said shoulder and being received in said notches.
' 3. A device of the class describedcomprising a flue thimble having overlapping edges, a flange extending laterally from one of said edges, additional flanges extending laterally from the opposite ends of said thimble and having sets of alined notches therein, and a U-shaped key engaging the inner and outer sides of said thimble, one of the arms of said key engaging the first mentioned flange and being received in one of said sets of notches.
thimble and having sets of alined notches therein, and a U-shaped key engaging the inner and outer sides of said thimble, one of the arms of said key being engaged with said flange and having its ends received in one of said sets of notches.
. 1 5. A device of the class described comprising a flue thimble having overlapping edges, one of the latter being provided with a reduced portion having a flange at the free edge thereof, additional flanges extending laterally from the opposite ends of said thimble and having sets of alined notches therein, a. U-shaped key engaging the inner and outer sides of said thimble, one of the arms of said key being engaged with the first mentioned flange and having'its ends received in one of said sets of notches, and means arranged on said thimble opposite said notches for retaining-said key in position.
6. A device of the class described comprising a flue thimble having overlapping edges, one of the latter being provided with a reduced portion having a flange at the free edge thereof, additional flanges extending laterally from the opposite. ends of said thimble and having sets of alined notches therein, said thimble being provided with slots disposed adjacent said notches, and a U-shaped key engaging the inner and outer sides of said thimble, the ends of one of the arms of said key extending through said slots and being received in one of said sets of notches, and the intermediate portion of said arm engaging the first mentioned flange.
7. The combination of a flue thimble having overlapping edges, a stove pipe having one of its ends disposed in said thimble, a U-shaped key engaging the inner and outer sides ofsaid thimble for clamping said edges together, said key engaging the inner end of said pip for securing the same in said thimble, a hook arranged at the free end of the inner arm of said key, and a flexible element having one of its ends engaged with said hook, the other end of said element being secured to said pipe.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnessesf ALLEN LEE THOMPSON.
